Gem Lake (Rocky Mountain National Park) and brewery for lunch

  • Jan 26, 2013 · 8:30 AM

Let's see Gem Lake in RMNP and then go to a brewery in Lyons.

Hike details:

Carpoolers meet at 8:30am and leave at 8:40 from the park n ride at 88th and Sheridan. Exit U.S. 36 at Sheridan and turn SOUTH. The parking lot is on the southeast corner of the interchange. DO NOT GO NORTH OF THE HIGHWAY, DO NOT PARK IN THE GARAGE. Please park as close to the entrance as possible. First person there, put a backpack on your hood or trunk so others can find you. I will not be at the carpool spot. Carpool drivers should plan not to drink alcohol at the brewery (they have great root beer).

Please give your driver $6 each for gas.

Meet at the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead in Estes Park at 9:50am, we'll start at 10am (No fee to park here) (map link, right click on green arrow)

The hike is 1.7 miles each way with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. (That means it's not easy) (Read more here.)

No dogs allowed in the park

Please bring traction, the trail will likely be icy

Please bring water and snacks. We will take a break at the lake. The length depends on the temperature.

Lunch/brewery details:

After the hike, we'll drive back to Lyons for lunch at Oscar Blues. (They have salads, burgers, etc...) PLEASE bring CASH to make it easier to pay the bill.

Please bring $2 donation for your organizer who makes this happen. :)

What a perfect day and a great group. A nice way to celebrate the 98th anniversary of the park's founding.

We are running late, but on track to be there by 845am at the meeting site. If anyone is able to wait we'd like to carpool and fill a car. No worries if not.

How critical is it to have traction as the weather has been mild in the Denver area. We'd love to join, but we don't have traction.

Expect some ice and snow. Traction is nice but not required.
