Bill Moore Lake - Idaho Springs (trying again)

  • July 17, 2013 · 2:30 PM

Due to a weather issue, let's try Bill Moore Lake again in Clear Creek County, near Idaho Springs and Empire. We'll take the CDT trail on the Idaho Springs side.

Expect a hike of about 7 miles RT with 1,000 feet of elev. gain. (I'm told some sections are steep.)

The trail starts on a Jeep road near Idaho Springs. We'll drive as far as we are comfortable, then hike the rest of the way. Typically we get within about a half mile of the trailhead.

TIME & LOCATION: Meet at 2:30, we'll leave at 2:40 from the Wooly Mammoth parking lot, section GG. (I-70, exit Morrison, go north, turn left at the first stop light and park in the parking lot on the northwest corner.)

If you want to meet near Idaho Springs, meet at 3pm at I-70, exit 238/Fall River Road.

Directions to trailhead: I-70, exit 238. Drive a short distance and turn right on Fall River Road. Reset your odometer. Drive 6.5 miles to the turnoff to RD 274. The turnoff is on a big curve, right next to a nice home.

RD 274 is a dirt road. From here, it's about 2 miles to the CDT. Go as far as you're comfortable driving, find a place to park and start hiking.

*** We'll carpool/caravan to the trailhead, hike and return. (Please give your drivers $5 gas money per person)

No dogs please.

Donation: $1 ($0 if unemployed)

very poor markings on the trails once we got into the trees on the bottom the trail was sometimes hard to follow and only my going the other way there the week before helped me

Well you might look at parnelli pete's report on the same trip for 7/10/13 but I think cdt goes above the basin of bill Moore lake so you are actually above I dont think it cuts down to lake but hard to tell

What we did last week isn't the same hike. Y'all will be going from a higher trailhead and won't have to walk as far or nearly as much UP. Sorry I won't make this one, have fun.

Deb I dont see where Fall River rd gets you onto trail for Bill Moore...what we did was go to downtown Empire on rte 40 and I believe we took North Main st to North Empire rd. Not sure how far we went up but we bore right to the interscetion of n fall river and Lion creek (no signs and parked in the clearing...there are many side trails and paths but to get to the lake we need to stay on north forest rd 183.1 we hike up N empire rd from where we parked car to the forest rd. You probably want to look at googlemaps to see the correct routing cause its very easy to get lost

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
