Chasm Lake (RMNP)

Chasm Lake (RMNP)

Chasm Lake fills a deep cirque basin enclosed by the steep flanks of Mt Meeker (13,911’), Longs Peak (14,259’) and Mount Lady Washington (13,281’). Longs Peak’s iconic, northeast-facing ‘Diamond’ rises dramatically some 2,456' above this stunning alpine lake. With more than half the trail running above treeline, visitors will enjoy miles of open tundra and sensational views throughout.

Since this is the same trailhead as Longs Peak we can expect the parking lot to be full and that we will have to park on the road leading to the park. Expect to have to walk half a mile to get to the trailhead. There is no fee for this part of the park.

This is for experienced hikers only.

Weather is unpredictable at these elevations, be prepared for anything.

Trail Details

Distance: 8.4 Mile round trip
Difficulty: Moderately Strenuous
Elevation at trailhead: 9,405'
Elevation at highest point: 11,823'
Elevation gain: 2398'
Dogs: No

Carpool Location

We will meet at the park-n-ride at 88th and Sheridan at 7:00. I will be at the north end of the lot; look for my red SUV. Those up north can meet us at the trailhead. If you intend to meet at the trailhead be sure and let me know.

Trailhead Location

I want to be at the trailhead by 8:30AM.

Additional Terms and Conditions

You are responsible for knowing where the carpool location and the trailhead are and getting there on time. You are responsible for researching the trail and knowing your own limits. You are responsible for dressing appropriately and bringing the necessary gear, water and snacks. This trip--as are all trips with this group unless otherwise noted--is an all day outing, do not sign up if you have other obligations that afternoon. The pace will be on the faster side, and everyone is expected to keep up; you will need to be in good shape to do this trip. It is considered poor etiquette to cancel at the last minute; any cancellation within 24 hours of the start of this meetup for any reason will be treated as a no-show.

There is a triathlon happening on us36 between Boulder and Lyons tomorrow morning, so it would be a good idea to find a different way to get to the trailhead. One possibility is to take us36 to Boulder then take a left on 119 to Nederland then take 72 to 7, then to the trailhead. Another way is to take 88th Ave west from the pnr which becomes 72, which can be followed all the way to 7. The 2nd way might be slower, but it avoids Boulder altogether, which might be the best way. Let me know what you think.

Going to Boulder by 36, then going to Ned, is probably a lot faster than going 72 to 7. If the triathlon is on the north side of town, going to 119 (Canyon Blvd) should not be a problem.

Hi Bill, Will we still meet at the 88th/ Sheridan at 7:00 location despite the issue in Boulder to Lyons????

    August 3, 2013

  • Don B.

Not sure which is faster, but avoiding Boulder on a Sunday is usually a good idea.
