Helene Lake Snowshoe (RMNP)

Helene Lake - Rocky Mtn Natl Park

We will take the trail to Helene Lake--one of the most beautiful in the park--from the Bear Lake parking lot. The trail is lightly used so may fade in and out, and may entail some breaking trail. This trip is not recommended for beginners.

Bring RMNP pass if you have one. Hopefully someone from each vehicle will have a pass.

Bring snacks. May stop at some restaurant in Lyons after for lunch.

Weather at these elevations is unpredictable, dress in layers and be prepared for any weather conditions. This trail is near tree line and exposed to wind.

Snowshoes are required. It is recommended that you bring micro-spikes, gaitors, poles, ski mask, goggles and a camera.

It is your responsibility to know where the trailhead is, that is why the link is included below. I want to leave the trailhead by 10:45AM. Let me know on your RSVP if you intend to meet here.

Additional Terms and Conditions

You are responsible for knowing where the carpool location and the trailhead are and getting there on time. You are responsible for researching the trail and knowing your own limits. You are responsible for dressing appropriately and bringing the necessary gear, water and snacks. This trip--as are all trips with this group unless otherwise noted--is an all day outing, do not sign up if you have other obligations that afternoon. The pace will be moderately fast, as are all of my more difficult trips, do not sign up if you have been on other outings in which the group has had to wait for you. It is bad etiquette to cancel at the last minute, cancellations within 24 hours of the start of this meetup will be treated as a no-show.

Great day. Awesome hike. Love the snow and snow flakes. Thanks Bill.

Why would they have a PNR right next to a RTD. For us non-Colorado native I couldn't tell the dif. Got caught up in the 36 construction afterward and did not get to trail head until 1130 way late. End up hiking up to Bear Lake and a few other short trails so it was not all a lost. Sorry for not able link up.

Great weather (snowflakes were big enough for me!) and great people! I got the bonus exfoliation treatment on the ride back (freezing rain) and Jarrod gets a bonus 1/2 shroom burger sitting in the back of his car. What more could you ask for?

I can't find the carpool location. I search rtd parking complex, dollar tree hotel and Marriott that neighbor it. Please call me[masked]-9579. Thanks.

Bill, I'll see you at the trail head. I'm riding with Veronica, Bernice, and Jared.

We can expect some snow tomorrow, but that certainly will not cause the trip to be cancelled. You have until 9 this morning to change your RSVP to not going without penalty. There is generally construction on us36 between Lyons and Estes Park, in which case I go on Hwy 7 instead, which is about 20 minutes longer, so we can expect to get to the trailhead not before 11. If it is snowing, however, construction will probably not be happening, which means we can take us36, so we will have to wait and see. I do hope we can find some way to arrange a ride for Bernice and David; I will try to make that happen if possible.

I'm going to bow out. I'd like a more bluebird day anyway. Looking forward to the next one Bill!

Anyone able to carpool from Boulder? My car's still going to be in the shop <sigh>, but I have a parks pass and cash for gas. Otherwise, I'll have to opt out.

I think I've worked out a carpool with some folks. Will let you know is that's not the case. Thanks!

I'm looking forward to this. I'm weather dependant as I just have a 2WD sedan and it's forecasted to snow all day. Most likely I'll meet at the TH unless someone with a good winter vehicle is willing to pick me up at the Lyons PNR. I do have a pass. Also be prepared for 30 min stops on Hwy 36 west of Lyons for road construction. http://www.coloradodot.info/projects/floodrelatedprojects/us-36-lyons-to-estes

Few times I've been up there the past few months I was better off taking 7. The delays on 66 can be a bear. They were even warning for 1hr delays at one of the spots.

A few reminders/clarifications: this is not an easy trip, if you rate yourself as "decent", that is probably not good enough for this trip. Further, the pace will be moderately fast and everyone is expected to keep up, you should have your water and camera where you can get to them without stopping. You must read the entire listing, especially the "additional terms and conditions" so you know what is expected of you. No dogs are allowed in RMNP. You must be on time to the PnR and the trailhead. Bring cash for drivers for gas.
