Aiken Canyon, Colorado Springs

  • Apr 26, 2014 · 9:00 AM

Let's go for an easy hike in a canyon near Colorado Springs!

Aiken Canyon has been preserved by the Nature Conservancy. It's only open on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. The loop hike, with a a 1/2 mile canyon, cabin ruins and an overlook should add up to 4.5-5 miles total.

Carpool: If you want to carpool, feel free to talk about below. I recommend meeting at the Castle Pines Park-n-Ride at 7:35am, leave at 7:45am. Take I-25 to exit 188. Go east, cross over I-25 and take first left onto Havana (going north). Park-n-Ride is 1/4 mile away on your left. First person there, please put a backpack on your hood or truck so others can find you. I will not be there, I am going to CS on Friday. (Roundtrip distance is about 130 miles, so the riders should give their drive about $18 total.  3 riders=$6 each.  2 riders= $9 each. Be generous, the driver is paying for wear and tear)

Hike: We should arrive at the Aiken Canyon parking lot 8:45ish. We'll start the hike at 9am. (We may have Colorado Springs meetup hikers joining us.)

Directions: Take I-25 to exit 140. Drive south on Nevada/CO 115 for 15 miles. Turn right on Turkey Canyon Ranch Road. The parking lot will be on your right.

No dogs (per preserve rules)

After the hike, maybe we can find a place for lunch, if the group is interested. I may hike at Cheyenne Mountain State Park after the first hike, depending on the weather.

*Note this hike is weather dependent. If we're expecting rain, I will reschedule.

If anyone is looking for a ride from the north metro area, or Downtown, I'm in Denver near 38th Ave and I-25, and will be heading south around 7 Saturday morning.

I am coming from aurora and can pick up on way if needed. I will be at the Castle Pines Park-n-Ride at 7:35am for anyone wanting carpool. Since I have my son and a car seat I plan to drive. My silverado crew cab can seat 3 more comfortably if needed.

Can I bring my 2 yrs old and hike with him on my back? He just did a 7.6 miles hike with me last weekend with another meetup and will not be a issue. Want to make sure. If not it is ok and I understand and can free up my slot. I drive a four door truck and have a annual pass and will have no issue driving. Thanks.

Hey Deb - I recommend the PnR lot right just East of I-25, exit 188 (Castle Pines Parkway) exit. It is just a few minutes south of Lincoln, and much less congested than the Lincoln exit. Take exit 188, turn East (cross over I-25), take very first ( and close) Left onto Havana frontage road (going North), and it is on your left in 1/4 mile. You can see the lot from I -25; not complicated. Big lot - plenty of room, patrolled regularly. I"ll try to make your hike.

Looking forward to this hike and getting to know some of the group.
I also enjoy the Incline if someone wants to make it a hike some day.
