With the temperatures rising in the metro area, it's time to hit the road on Wednesday afternoons.
Let's start with a hike to Urad Lake near Empire and Henderson. After being closed for 3 years, Urad Lake has opened as a state wildlife area.
It appears we can drive to Urad Lake now, so we will likely hike to Hassell Lake and possibly around Urad Lake. This is an exploratory trip, so I don't know what to expect. Plan for a hike as short as 2 miles RT or as much as 5-6 RT. We'll hike to Hassell Lake, then hike around Urad or something. *Note, the hike to Hassell Lake is one mile and 800 feet gain. So steep. I'll be going a bit slow since it's at 11,000 feet. There may even be snow!
Carpoolers: Meet at Wooly Mammoth, lot DD, at 2pm. We'll leave at 2:10pm. First person there, put a backpack on your hood or trunk so others can find you. This is an 85 mile drive roundtrip. Please plan to give your driver $5 each, (if 3 passengers), $7.50 each (if 2 passengers).
Directions from the Forest Service: From I-70 west, take exit 232 to US 40,proceed northwest approx. 9 miles to small town of Berthoud Falls. Turn left at the sign for Jones Pass/Henderson Mine. Follow paved road to Woods Creek Road #146 turn left, drive 2 miles and park at Upper Urad Reservoir.
Trailhead: We should arrive at the trailhead at 3pm, depending on construction. We'll start pretty quick after arriving. I'd like to finish around 6pm, get back to town at 7ish, again depending on construction at the twin tunnels.
Dinner: If you'd like to have group dinner at 7ish back in Golden, please email me and make a nearby suggestion. I can't do dinner due to my early work schedule.
Donation: $1 to the organizer for her time
Dogs: I don't know the rules if dogs are allowed or not. If you want to look it up and let me know, then your dog is welcome, on leash.
I welcome your suggestions if you've been here!
