THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU  by H.G. Wells is Well's 1896 personification of the scientific quest to control the natural world and ultimately human nature through the tale of a surgeon on a remote island who performs experiments that transform animals into men.  Made into movies several times, the novel deals with the themes of pain, cruelty, moral responsibility, human identity and human's attempts to interfere with nature.

Remember...January we are having our annual party and book exchange, so February is the next book reading meeting.

Good conversation about beasts -or were they people at least for a time (ha ha). Not sure we ever decided that one.

Bummed that I will not be able to make it. Looking forward to my first time attending next month! I have a rare occasion where I will have to stay late at work.

I've just started THE ISLAND and am entranced by the brooding mystery already. You can too, it's so short! And DPL has lots of copies "ON SHELF."

Indeed! Plus it's an old enough work that it's available for FREE as a PDF - see my earlier note below.

This book is out of copyright, and so it is readily available online in free electronic formats. There are a couple of versions that are in two-page wide format like the Electronic Classics Series version from the University of Pennsylvania, if that works with your reader; I like the single page PlanetPDF version.
