Told in first-person narrative by Dinah, daughter of Jacob, THE RED TENT by Anita Diamant gives voice to a minor biblical character in the setting of an ancient world of caravans, shepherds, mid-wives and slaves.  The book's title refers to the tent where Jacob's tribe must, according to ancient law, take refuge while menstruating or giving birth and in which women find mutual support from their mothers, sisters and aunts.

Say I finished making my little chart about Jacob's descendants and there were only five male names mentioned. In most cases Gera mentions only that so and so had "X" number of sons. But each and every female descendant was mentioned by name. Interesting.

It was good. I had to leave early because there were protesters and I was afraid that the Civic Center Station was going to be closed and I would not have a way home. Good to see everybody.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
