New Poll: Book Club Location

Dear Book Lovers --

Since its inception, the Denver Book Club has met at the Denver Press Club, which offers a literary legacy, a central location, an affordable bar and buffet, plus no fees for our use.

At the June book club meetup, one of our members pointed out that the Denver Press Club is "inaccessible" for the mobility impaired (short stairs in the entry, steep stairs to the second floor).

As an historic building, the Denver Press Club is not obligated under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to become accessible (e.g., install ramps and elevators), and the historic landmark status limits what can be done to the structure. (Under ADA, once a building owner makes any accommodation, the entire structure must be made accessible.) The press club board in the past concluded that ADA compliance is beyond the club's financial means. A major grant might cover the huge expense, but the matter has not been pursued, chiefly because such construction would close the club for three to six months, which man a loss of revenue the club cannot afford.

The book club member who raised the issue accepts the Press Club's fiscal limits, so she wants us to move to a building that's fully accessible. Consequently, because the lub is run democratically, I'm bringing the matter to you for a vote. Please visit the poll (link below) and select the options that are true for you.

P.S. You voted overwhelmingly (70 percent) to select books two months in advance of the meetings, so we'll get a September poll posted shortly. Please send your book nominations to Cindy through our website.
