Hi,

My name is Scott Wynn. I just joined this group because my wife and I are looking to hire a good web programmer and have not had good luck. We figured what better place to go then a group of self-proclaimed web developers.

We would like your advice on finding a good web programmer...maybe you are one.

We have a veJry unique and particular idea we would like developed. Although I have some computer programming background I do not have enough experience in web programming and SQL to develop what we would like to develop.

What questions do we ask to make sure that the programmers can accomplish what we want to accomplish?

What questions do we ask to make sure we get an accurate quote for money and timing to complete our site?

What are some red flags to look out for? (i.e. Is someone who is going to set up our site using Joomla inexperienced or using tools to be more efficient?)

Any help, guidance or suggestions are welcomed. If you are a freelance programmer or know of someone who is and would like to talk with us, we would love to talk to you.

Scott,

Not sure if anyone helped you with your questions yet, but here are some suggestions for you.

The first thing you want to do is create a clear and concise outline of your project. It's hard for developers to grasp your project if it's not detailed properly. It's like asking to build a house but all you say is, I want it to have a fireplace, a yard, and 3 bedrooms. Lots of ways to lay that house out. So your first priority needs to be to figure out the business model, organize your thoughts, and then look to find someone to help refine your idea and create a site out of it.

Hiring a programmer is difficult. Essentially you're trying to hire someone who has more knowledge then you and you need to evaluate that knowledge without having the proper background. The most important thing is that the developer should be able to take your ideas and then give enough feedback to you to help refine those ideas and manage the project. It also depends on the complexity of your project. This could be a 5 page email on this section alone, but there are a lot of ways to skin the cat here.

Most web projects these days require about 3 people. You want a project manager so you have 1 person to talk to. Typically they will have a designer and then a programmer to help you. Design + coding ability is very rare to find in 1 person because they require different skill sets. So you'll typically have to find a designer and developer to work with separately.

There is no right answer if using a CMS like Joomla will help you or not. It depends on the project and what functions you need your website to do. Typically the more complex your project is, the more you should stay away from a premade CMS like Joomla.

Hope that helps.

-Eric
