This workshop, a multi-media presentation is going to
explore the origins and development of Salsa Music through dance.During
the Golden Age of Salsa in the 70s, LPs contained salsa,
cha cha ch?, merengue, mambo and bolero. Live music flourished, musicians
were revered. Dancers lived to perform and stayed on the floor for the
sheer joy of self expression through musical interpretation. Eileen
Torres will conduct a session highlighting the popular Latin social dance
forms during this era. Torres' remarks will be punctuated with
video and audio clips, mini demos, and a step-by-step breakdown of each
dance pattern. Audience members will be invited to participate in

- THE KEY: A RHYTHMIC JOURNEY FROM AFRICA TO THE NEW WORLD
Multiple Grammy nominated drummer, percussionist, arranger, composer
and bandleader Bobby Sanabria connects the roots and history of
Afro-Cuban music with the 5-beat rhythm of the clave. Through his
speaking and singing, you'll experience how the clave, with its West
African roots, journeyed to Cuba and the U.S. The clave influence remains
the core of popular music genres such as funk, R & B, rock &
roll, and hip hop. Sanabria will demonstrate, using archival film
footage, Latin American music's impact on American culture.
