Early April climbing weekend

So a couple of us have decided that we're definitely going to Boulder Canyon tomorrow. Meet at the Startbucks/Taco Bell on the corner of Baseline and Broadway in Boulder and we'll figure out our first crag and go from there.

I know a couple other people are going to Shelf Road, if you're interested in that, sift through the comments below and hit them up.

Hey guys. This was a great meetup! Thanks to all who made the event. I think we should do more like this and I hope to see everybody again this season!

First time climbing outdoors and glad to have found such a wonderful group to do it with. Thanks so much to Allison for organizing the day! Great to meet all of you, look forward to climbing with you again!

Ok - we kind of need to figure this out before tomorrow morning. How many people want to go to Boulder Canyon? (I can drive a couple people too.) If we have more just me, let's do it! We can meet at the Starbucks/Taco Bell at the corner of Baseline and Broadway tomorrow at 8:30. Then we can decide which part of Boulder Canyon we want to go to.

If you're interested in a ride, please text me at [masked]

I will only be able to climb for 3-4 hours, but sounds fun to me! I hope my shorter stay will not be an issue.

Success today! Let's make it happen again soon.

I'm up for a Shelf Rd trip. Can lead moderate to hard 10s and have a rope and draws to spare. Carpool anyone?[masked]

If Shelf Rd's not happening, I'm up for Clear Creek or Boulder or where ever.

  • Lura

I am happy to organize the Shelf Road group for this weekend? Any takers beside Clayton?

    March 28, 2013

    • Lura

Shelf is all sports routes! Jason and I are spending the night Saturday night so we can climb both days. Are you guys climbing one or two days? How does meeting at the Shelf Road parking lot at 10 am sound? It's a little less than 3 hours from Denver. If we don't catch up with you there, we'll be at the Piggy Bank wall. Jason has a bright yellow back pack and mine is purple. My cell is[masked]

unfortunately I will have to make shelf road a trip for a different time, Lura. I have prior obligations saturday afternoon. Just wanted to let you know so you didn't plan on me showing up.

I have only climbed indoors so far, but am very interested in doing this. I have shoes, harness and can purchase a helmet. I only know how to top rope at this point. Is it ok for me to go on this trip? Thanks!

    March 27, 2013

    • Allison

Boulder Canyon has a bunch of awesome climbs - good for any level climber. They also have a bunch of spots where we can set up top rope, which makes it better for those who've never lead/sport climbed before

Few go to Shelf Rd. I'd vote for Catslab.
Seems to be the best choice in Boulder Canyon.

Catslab, is in Clear Creak canyon

Sorry. Finger injury needs more time to heal. I thought it would be set to go by this weekend but it isn't.

    March 28, 2013

How about Clear Creek Canyon, North Table Mountain or Boulder Canyon for the people that can't make it to Shelf? Sounds like two groups is the way to go this weekend...

    1 · March 28, 2013

  • Clayton L.

I could be down for shelf. Its going to be great weather this weekend, and there are plenty of grades and climbs to go around for the large group

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to Denver as well, would anyone be able to post some directions? I'm down for sport or bouldering. Also, if anyone wants to carpool I live in close to downtown Denver and would be happy to drive (especially if you know how to get there!). Thanks

    March 28, 2013

  • Alex

Castle Rock is mostly a trad, with bouldering, do not know any areas that have sport and bouldering, some sport areas, The Sport park, ? not sure about sun here. The Bihedral, sunny The Riviera, sunny but no bouldering, I know of,

    March 27, 2013

  • Erin P.

Hi All! I started bouldering at the DBC about 4 months ago. Before that I have had no climbing experience, unless you can count the kitchen cabinetry when I was 5. I took the front range climbing class in garden of the gods and I went to a gym for top rope once. I'd love to get to the point where I can lead climb and lead belay. If it's okay, I'd love to come meet everyone and learn all I can! I own a chalk bag, chalk, shoes, harness, belay and a locking carabiner for the belay... well, I think it's for the belay.

    March 27, 2013

I'm going to vote with Allison for Boulder Canyon. The mix of sport and bouldering and the huge variety of routes sound fun!

Hi, not going to make it this weekend and will be out of town through the 3rd week of April. I hope to meet up and climb with you all when I return. Have fun this weekend!

  • Lura

Hi! My husband and I are up for climbing this weekend at Shelf Road. We have two ropes and plenty of quick draws. We moved to Denver last summer and are looking to make climbing friends.

    March 27, 2013

  • Allison

Ok - We need to hammer down a location before Saturday morning. The only idea I have is to vote by replying to this post. We'll tally up the replys and the group will go there. Sound good?

My vote is for Boulder Canyon - Castle Rock or another spot with both bouldering and sport climbing.

I'm game for anywhere- but may need help with transportation given my car is old and doesn't do well with mountain passes if the locations are around there.

So, I'm new to Denver and outdoor climbing, but I'd be interested in a bouldering place and/or a varied sport place since I've never actually sport climbed before, but I think I could do it alright.

  • Bao

So has anyone figure out where we're climbing?

    March 25, 2013

I'm a maybe. I got no gear, but I do have a shinny credit card. What should I buy?

    Rookie climber here!

    1 · March 25, 2013

    • Timothy K.

I have two spare harnesses, one of which might fit. I have a spare belay device. The only thing you have to have (that is hard to borrow) is rock shoes. If this is your first time ever, you might try renting them from REI. If you are sure you want to get into climbing, buy a harness, a belay device, and shoes to start.

      1 · March 25, 2013

    • Rafael R.

Thanks, If I do go, I'll rent the shoes from REI. Thanks for the reply!

  • Alex

? Is this a weekend camping trip or day climbing trip, as some the replys I see, are for a day trip areas, CCC and Castlewood, Avoad Eldo Canyon with a group,

Shelf Road is best for the 5.9 and up sport climber, as there are a handful of 5.7 and 5.8's,(some trad) take a number and get in line on weekends, on the easy sport routes, no Bouldering I'm aware of, about 2 hrs 40min from Denver,

10 Mile Canyan has lot more easy routes, but trad, there are sports routes a one 5.6, few 5.8's and higher, and there is bouldering, about 2 1/2 hrs Denver,

I would say go Devils Head, But I think the road may be closed,
that will be a future trip,

I would be up anything, but Bouldering, bad ankles.

    March 24, 2013

    • Allison

I initially suggested it as a camping trip, but I'm really open to anything- whatever the group wants, I guess. I would like to boulder, so I guess we should split up or go somewhere that has a little bit of everything.

      March 24, 2013

    • Timothy K.

I'd love to camp, too, but none of the suggestions so far have camping that I'm aware of except Shelf and (maybe?) 11 Mile. If camping was your thing, let's make that happen! I'll research camping, bouldering, and rope spots.

      March 25, 2013

  • Alex

Bouldering sounds good to me. Castlewood Canyon had both. Not sure about camping.

I might be out of town for work, but if not, I'm in and will go anywhere. I have been to clear creek, shelf, and castlewood many times, but my eldo experience is a little limited. I loved the climbs that I have done there though. I have three ropes, a bunch of quick draws and a full trad rack with some doubles. I've been climbing for about 14 years but it has been non existent for the last 2. Not sure what happened, but I want to get back into it and would like to meet new people. Probably wont be comfortable leading more than easy 10's on sport or 5.7 on trad. I'm down for all grades below those as well and setting up top ropes too. I also have a couple extra harnesses and belay devices as well. Hope to see/meet you all soon.

    March 23, 2013

  • Timothy K.

I'd like to get out, since Shelf Road fell through for me, too. I've got a couple of ropes, a sport rack, and small to medium trad rack. I'm still currently getting my lead head back, but I can lead easier stuff and set up tope ropes.

I'd be open for almost anywhere, except Eldo. I don't currently like leading in Eldo: the gear is always so tricky.

Recently I've been to Table, Castlewood Canyon, and Red Rocks Canyon. The latter two are fun and sometimes overlooked (especially Castlewood: if been going there a lot).

If anyone is interested, I can show you my top rope solo setup. It's been awesome since main partners can't climb right now.

I've been wanting to go to Castlewood Canyon!! That's my vote. Not that my vote should really count since I'm only half-RSVPed due to a possible work committment.

      March 22, 2013

    • Timothy K.

I really like Castlewood. The climbs are harder than you'd think though, even though they are really short.

      March 22, 2013

  • Timothy K.

Eldorado has a ton of climbing, and it's a great place. It is mostly trad, though, and somewhat tricky trad at that. Boulder Canyon has more than a 1,000 routes. North Table Mountain has a lot of routes, but can get quite crowded. Clear Creek Canyon has a lot of nice sport routes. Castlewood Canyon has a lot of routes, all of them very short. Shelf Road is awesome and has camping (none of the above do, if that is desired). Red Rocks canyon is interesting slab climbing on really soft rock (it won't be everybody's cup of tea). Some great stuff in the South Platte, often with a bit more of a wilderness feel and trad bent.

I second Mountain Project: it is a great site and you can find me on there.

I currently like the places where I know I can set up a top rope, as my leading skills are rusty. That includes a lot of places in Boulder Canyon, Table Mountain, and Castlewood Canyon.
