I apologize for the delay in confirming the details of the Rafting & Royal Gorge Trip. I also want to poll interested members on a few different options, which we need to make a collective decision on as soon as possible since this trip is only 2 weeks away.
If we stick with the original plan (Option #1)- all interested members can book their reservation at the Best Western in Canon City (you should call the hotel directly to get our group discounted rate: $79 1 queen (with refrigerator), $89- 1 king or 2 double beds w/fridge & microwave, $110- 2 queens + a pull out sofa (this "family" room is twice the size of a regular room).
Hotel Info: Best Western, 1925 Fremont Drive, Canon City, CO 81212 (719)[masked]
Mention you are part of New to CO (& Lisa quoted me these prices on 6/11/07).
Our original schedule (Option #1) was: (Canon City- the entire weekend)
Fri. nt.- Best Western in Canon City
Sat.- rafting (meet at 9am at the Best Western if you want to drive up on Sat.) for 1/2 a day (the BigHorn Sheep Canyon trip)
Sat. nt.- dinner at "the best Italian restaurant in Southern CO"- Canon City
Sun.- Royal Gorge Bridge/Park
OR, here are a few other options (after I did more research)
Option #2: (Buena Vista- Fri. nt. & Sat. day- full day rafting trip, Canon City- Sat. nt. & Sunday)
Friday night in Buena Vista
Saturday- raft in Buena Vista (Brown's Canyon)- full day*
& drive to Canon City (1hr30min)
Saturday nt.- dinner at Italian restaurant in Canon City
& stay at Best Western in Canon City
Sunday- Royal Gorge Bridge & Park
*After talking with a co-worker, who is a native of CO & trained as a rafting instructor, & an employee of River Rafters (the company who will be running our trip), it seems obvious that Brown's Canyon ("the most popular trip") in Buena Vista is more exciting and fun than Bighorn Sheep Canyon in Canon City. The challenge with Canon City is that it sounds like their trips are either more at the beginner/mild-moderate level (Big Horn) or advanced (Royal Gorge trip) vs. Brown's Canyon, also okay for beginners, but a lot more fun for our adventurous group.
Also, the 1/2 day trip for Brown's Canyon lasts 1.5-2 hours and costs $49.40 vs. the full-day trip which lasts 6 hours and includes lunch costs $78.89.
As a group, we can all start together and then some of us end at the 1/2 day point if some members wish to continue to do the full-day trip. And then, we can meet up to drive to Canon City together.
Option #3- same as #2, but 1/2 day rafting trip
Please e-mail me your preference so I can let the group know asap what our decision is. Sorry to complicate things, but I hope the options will give you all more input into the trip.
Any of the 3 options are great with me.
