Monks and Moorings Walk

Monks and Moorings Walk

By following this 6.5 mile walk, you will encounter the past and future of Burton and the surrounding area. You can see how the Trent and Mersey Canal played a part in the town's industrial history and how old gravel workings have been transformed into a nature reserve.

You will pass historic Sinai House, enjoy wonderful views from the Needwood scarp, pass through Ancient Woodlands and complete the links with the future by visiting new woodlands planted as part of the developing National Forest.

This is classed as a "medium" walk. Full details of the walk and the route are included on this leaflet:

http://www.nationalforest.org/visit/images/location/pdfs/monks_moorings.pdf

Meet in the car park at Branston Water Park at Midday (Free car park!)

Branston Water Park is reached by car off the A38 northbound. Follow the brown tourism signs.

Sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing for the weather and something to drink (non alcoholic!) are advisable.

Bring a pack up and we'll stop somewhere along the route, for a break and something to eat :-)

This event will be weather dependant.... and will be rescheduled if wet.

If anyone needs a lift from Derby, please leave a comment when you RSVP.

Update[masked] - This event has been rescheduled for Saturday 29 June 2013. Other details as before.

    • Steve

Yes proper boots make a big difference. They don't help much with the nettles though :-)

I enjoyed this walk. Great company and good weather with a sprinkle of added extra fun! :-) Thanks Steve for leading the walk and everyone who helped to negotiate a difficult track :-) NF really need to do something about the signage, but now we all know the way! Would be great to repeat the walk in the autumn! Thanks again and hope to see you all on another walk some time.

    Sorry guys, have fun

Despite the weather at the moment, the forecast tomorrow is for a dry day with sunny spells. So, subject to a last minute pitch inspection in the morning, the walk will go ahead as planned. If the weather has taken a turn for the worse in the morning, I'll post a comment here before 11am.

Hi Steve that sounds great, see you Saturday

      June 25, 2013

Yes, a good decision to postpone Steve. Not only can I now make this one, but the forecast looks settled for the week ahead. Hope it holds for us... :-)

    June 20, 2013

    • Steve

Sorry about that .... but it was either next week or middle of August (which it may still be yet!)

      June 20, 2013

  • Judith

Think your decision to postpone was the right one, but unable to make Sat 29th.

    June 20, 2013

  • Steve

As the weather forecast for Saturday is "wet, cold and windy", I have postponed this walk for a week .... in the hope that next weekend will be better!!

      June 20, 2013

  • Steve

The forecast for Saturday, at the moment, is heavy rain - so unless it changes between now and then, it's looking like this event may be postponed. Watch this space!

    June 19, 2013

  • Judith

I will be coming from Borrowash if I can help anyone this way with a lift, but beware,I wont want to attend if it's raining.

    June 18, 2013

    • Steve

Thanks. If it's wet, it will be rescheduled.

      June 18, 2013

      June 16, 2013

    • Steve

Hi Jess. You'll need to let me know where you are, so I can find out if someone is passing through that way :-)

  • Abi

    Depending on weather forecast!

    June 18, 2013

    • Steve

I can't imagine it will be much fun, if it's pouring with rain, so we'll see what the forecast is nearer the time. There should be at least one nice Saturday in the near future!

I'll be coming from Eastwood then down the A38. Can pick up one or two peeps along the way if anyone needs a lift.

    June 18, 2013

    • Steve

Hi Marie. That's great thanks. We'll see who needs lifts nearer the weekend and whether they are en route and then try and sort it out but it will certainly help :-)

Can I get a lift please?

    May 28, 2013

    • Steve

Hi. I've made a note that you would like a lift and we'll see from who's going nearer the time, who needs lifts and who will be driving from various parts of Derby. If you can e-mail me which part of Derby you live in, that would help.
