Top rate Meetup as usual Simon - thanks for suggesting! Lovely weather and chat. And we came close to knocking one drunken, larey 'narrowboater' into the canal! ;-)

Ok, here's a suggestion for the route. We could go the entire journey off road by following the old canal path (tarmac) from Alvaston Park to the Trent/Mersey canal proper and then by the canal all the way to Shobnall Marina which is less than 1 mile from Burton Railway Station. Nearest Real Ale pub is the Marstons 'Oak & Ivy'.

Single train journey back costs £6.40 (though we'd have to book cycle tickets by Friday pm latest). I fancy a few bevvys so maybe a good idea rather than ride into the canal coming back! :-)

So far, only 4 going and there's two trains just 6 minutes apart. So 2 could get the 19:21 train and the next 2 the 19:27 train. Need to book tickets (free) tho asap if all in agreement. Re-group at Derby.

    Comments please....

Hi Martin, 30 miles round trip! Or with my suggestion of one way only via the canal path, it would be about 18 miles as it's a bit more 'meandering'.

Just a bit confused about what distances are likely to be involved. Are we saying it's 30 miles to get there? Or 30 miles there and back in total? I'm running in the morning so due to potential 'being broken' and Saturday night being Saturday night I'm not sure I can commit to an epic all-dayer. May still come for 1 or 2 if I can work out a sorter route back though.

There you go, that's a proper bike ride - why don't you go to Lichfield for the Beer Festival. If only I wasn't going to Nottingham :-)

if you weren't going to notts, you wouldn't be going to Lichfield either, eh?

Oh no! I'm actually living in Burton, but it's the Lichfield Beer Festival, so that's where I am on Saturday so I can't give you a warm Burtonian welcome :( Enjoy!!

bad timing, but since we've exhausted local foods (could only think of melton pork pies and bakewell tarts anyway) we'll start some rides to local breweries, so Burton will certainly be back in the map :)

Sorry going to see Greenday !

Steve's got a point there... cycle to Lichfield, beer fest and then train back! (Train tickets £13 + the fest price of course - not much more money than the Bakewell 'feast'!). Oh, and we'd need cycle train tickets in advance. Comments?

bikes on trains thing might be the problem, checked it out and its x-country trains back via Brum so defo have to prebook somehow, and then only 2 bikes wasn't it? or wobbly ride back ;)
