Tamworth Castle

For those that were a little disappointed that Nottingham Castle  wasn't a real castle, I thought that we would go and visit a proper castle ... at Tamworth :-)

Step back in time and experience life in a Medieval Castle.  Explore Tudor and Stuart chambers, grand Victorian reception rooms and the magnificent late Medieval Great Hall.

Tamworth Castle promises a brilliant day out.  There is plenty to see and even more to do with hands on displays and costumes. The Castle Keep is set in extensive pleasure grounds in the centre of Tamworth's historic market town.

Over the centuries the Medieval motte and bailey Castle has welcomed royal visitors, key figures in history and nobility.

With over 900 years of history a tour of Tamworth Castle is a journey through time. Visitors are invited to explore 15 rooms, each offering an insight into the changes in the Castle's fortunes and those of its inhabitants over the centuries.

Admission Adults - £7.00

If more than 12 go, the admission fee will be reduced to £6.

We will arrange a meeting point in Derby, where we can meet up and travel together. The time for meeting here will be 10.45am.

If however you would prefer to make your own way there, that's fine. We will meet outside the Castle at Midday (subject to traffic between Derby and Tamworth!)

I will e-mail out more details to those attending nearer the time.

As there seems to be some confusion over the travelling arrangements for this event, I thought that I would try and clarify things. In order to save everyone having to drive all the way to Tamworth on their own and also to save on fuel costs, I've arranged a meeting point near to Derby City centre, so that anyone who wants to, can meet, park up and then travel together. There should hopefully be spare seats in cars, for anyone that doesn't drive but, of course, I can't guarantee this. It all depends on how many drivers we get on the day.

    Hi Steve,
If I go I'd be taking my small mobility scooter or manual wheelchair. Unfortunately I don't drive or have a car to offer at the moment. So I'd have to go by train & cabs/beg a lift with someone.
(Both things fit in an old Corsa for e.g. with the Parcel Shelf off-re chair - and I have a Blue Disabled Parking Badge).

Can you tell me a bit more? Specifically -
    - A friend tells me they've had a lift installed in recent years, so it's now accessible - yes? Any idea if they have a limit re no. wheelchair users in the place at once? (I only ask because the Jorvik centre in York does)
    - Would a lift be feasible with someone? (I'd probably need a cab to get to town to the meeting point, so if I could work out before hand would be helpful!)

Thanks - sorry to catch up with springing these queries last minute.

    Hello,
I´m new here and I´m very sure how this works. Could somebody tell the details of this excursion? I have to do anything else?
    See you!

Hi Iban. Welcome to the group. All of the details for this trip are in the description above. There's nothing really that I can think of to add :-)

Hi. I'm still unsure how getting there would work exactly, so Iban isn't the only one - Hi Iban!

Hi jim i know you want to leave a bit early to attend the eve meet up event which i am also attending. I will be driving so if you travel with me it saves u getting the bus as i may leave early too. It's no prob just let me know

    September 5, 2013

  • Gavin

Hi just to say ill be taking my blue badge with me so whoever car i go it can park in a disabled bay :-)

    1 · September 5, 2013

  • Judith

Morning Steve, I was speaking to Clare at the Curry Night last night, she suggested perhaps you might be interested in knowing that you have to pay if you park in the castle car park, but if you park in the Venturer Retail Park (which is a short walk across the road) we can park there free). Just a thought for all to consider.

    Ref the guide?

I'm not sure how it works regarding booking a guide, but if we could book one on the day & share the cost if everyone is happy to do so, would that be worth suggesting.............................?

I will be driving straight to Tamworth with my + 1, so will meet outside the castle at midday as you arranged. I know Jim is thinking about taking the bus there & back to Tamworth, but I am sure someone will be more than happy to give him a lift.

Look forward to seeing you all there.

    September 5, 2013

    • Steve

Hi Judith. Thanks for that. Unfortunately the guides aren't "on site" - they have to be booked in advance for specific time slots by the Castle, which is why it involves filling in booking forms and paying beforehand .... so I'm afraid that isn't an option now. Jim thinks that he might need to come back earlier than the rest of us, which is why he is looking at public transport but I have already told him that he could still travel there with the rest of us and possibly back depending on the time we all leave. See you on Saturday.

I can't make it anymore. Training for Three Peaks takes precedence over everything at the moment. Sorry guys.

Has the meeting point been decided yet? also which direction would you be going trying to decide whether its worth me making my own way there or come into Derby to come as a group

I'm sorry but I've not been able to collect enough money in to book the guided tour, so we'll just have to do the tour ourselves when we get there :-) For those of you that have given me £10, your admission fee is covered and I will give you your change on the day. If 12 or more go, admission will be £6 each, if less than 12 £7.

I wanted to give you the money for the guided tour last night and now I wish I went for the last 30 minutes just to give you that.

      September 2, 2013

    • Steve

Even if you had Rich, it wouldn't have made any difference. I didn't even have half of the amount needed to book a tour.

      September 2, 2013

  • Karen

I'll be driving from Long Eaton into Derby if anyone needs a lift to meeting point from my direction.

There isn't really another opportunity before tomorrow, I'm afraid. Let's hope that I can get enough from others today, to cover the costs and I can collect you money at a later date.

If anyone wants to give me £10 for the guided tour option but won't be coming to the concert this evening, I am planning to be at The Broadway Pub from between 4.30 and 5pm today.

Change of plan - got something else come up so won't be coming after all!

    August 17, 2013

There will be a meeting point just on the edge of the city centre. You will need to make your way there and then we will arrange car sharing to Tamworth and back.

I'm interested! How is everyone going to be getting there? It seems pointless all going in different cars!

That's why, if you read the event description, you will see that there will be a meeting point in Derby, so that we can meet up and travel together :-)
