Bike Ride: Darley Abbey to Elvaston Castle

This ride starts from the Car Park in Darley Abbey in case anybody can't get here by bike!

The ride will be about 7 miles there and 7 miles back.  From the car park we will ride across the bridge, through the mills and then down Folly Road to join the cycle path at the bottom of Folly Road.  We will stay on this cycle path by the river passing through the city centre, Bass rec, Pride Park, Wilmorton, under Raynesway, and turn off towards Elvaston Castle just before Borrowash.  It should take about 45 minutes to get to the castle.

I'll allow an hour at the castle tea room as service can be slow but the cake is good.

I've used the post code of the Darley Abbey Club in case anyone is using Satnav to find the car park.  Deans Field and the Car Park are by the Darley Abbey Club which is on the junction of Darley Street, New Road, and Poplar Row and opposite the The Abbey Pub.

Meetup time is 1.15pm for a prompt 1.30pm start so that we are back before the light fades.  If the weather is awful I will postpone this event.

Please note this is not a professional cycling event so as with all Meetup events you will be responsible for your own well being and safety of your own bike.

Well organised event - and a really good route. A little bit ambitious for my first bike ride for many years for me - but will come on another (and try to keep up once I have mastered the gears and changed the saddle!!) Thanks Wendy.

Yes, weren't we lucky with the weather after all - the only real downpour being whilst we were in the tea room. Thanks to those who came along to my first attempt at a DS bike ride.

What' time will you be in the city centre by the museum?

    March 2, 2014

    • Wendy

We won't be there Mark. We are going through town on the river path so if you hang around Cathedral Green, we should be riding through there at 1.45pm. We'll look out for you.

Wendy, as there are so many on the waiting list, I think I should come off as I always intended to meet you guys at Elvaston Castle for a cuppa as it's on my doorstep & light permitting ride with you back to Darley Abbey.

No problem Gary, it's all about team work! I might see you all at the castle for a cup of tea, I am hosting my first event the night before so house guests! Enjoy everyone! And keep warm! ;-))

    What bikes? Road or mountain?

    January 21, 2014

    • Wendy

Whichever you prefer. The paths are pretty good so I use mountain or hybrid.

Wendy, I think you mean Elvaston Castle just to save confusion?
I live in Borrowash just down the road from the castle so I'm thinking I might meet you there then come back alone from Darley Abbey to save getting the car out? I suppose it depends what time you might arrive at the castle? Just a thought on my part?

That sounds a plan! We can meet for a tea at the castle & go from there weather permitting! Great!

That's fine Garylee, thanks for letting me know you will be joining us at the castle rather than Darley Abbey.

Why is there a restriction on numbers ?

    January 1, 2014

    • Wendy

Purely to keep it simple Sharon, I'm not a professional ride leader and only been out with small groups in the past and would feel happier not having too big a group to keep tabs on. Also service at the castle is slow, so it would take ages to get a large group through.
