Claymills Victorian Pumping Station

Claymills Victorian Pumping Station

One of Britain's largest restored Victorian Steam pumping station. Two operational beam engines and 26 other steam engines. There is also a steam driven workshop with blacksmith's forge.

Be transported back in time  to when steam powered engines were a common sight and were being used in all aspects of Victorian life. The Claymills Pumping Station was opened in 1885 to improve public health in Burton upon Trent and its surrounding area. Before 1885 more than half the households in Burton were still using buckets for all their toilet needs; this household waste, along with industrial waste from the town’s famous breweries, flowed through open drains into the River Trent!

Meet at 2.00pm

The Pumping Station will be in steam on this day.  Subject to how busy it is on the day, we should be able to have a guided tour.

Admission:  £5.00

All parking is free. On steaming days, the on-site parking is reserved for disabled visitors, however ample parking is available approximately 220 yards from the site.

This is May Bank Holiday Monday

Really interesting, struck me as little boy paradise with Model railways, Meccano plus larger models with big people riding them and vintage cars on view.
A historical view as to why we live in such healthier conditions nowadays.
    Many thanks Steve for organising.

Just to let you know, I have received an e-mail from the trust chairman (one of our tour guides!) thanking us all for going along today. I have passed on our thanks to them for the guided tours. If you enjoyed it, they would appreciate it, if you can tell anyone you think might be interested in visiting at some point. They are a charity and rely on people going along to their open days to raise funds. Also, if anyone can think of ways in which they could improve the "Claymills Experience" they are always pleased to hear them. Let me know and I will pass it on :-)

I have spoken to someone from the The Claymills Pumping Engines Trust and we will hopefully be getting a guided tour on the day. Please keep your RSVPs up to date, so that I have a good idea of numbers and try to be on time or you may miss some it :-)
