Design Thinking Kickoff Event - Bring A Friend!

  • February 22, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Bring a friend or a date, and enjoy a night of Design Thinking! This is our kick-off event for the year and there will be treats, a glowing igloo, a beer dispensing arcade machine, and lots of creative space to get your design on!

You will be sharing, or learning for yourself, how to be a Design Thinker & Doer through a short but intense program put together by Stanford's d.school. Bring your own materials for prototyping - below are just some things that you can bring:

*pens, markers, or crayons
*post-it notes!!
*paper - lined, printer paper, or construction paper.
*crafty supplies - pipe cleaners, string, buttons, glue, tape, etc.
*left over wrapping paper and ribbons
*recycled items - paper rolls, card board boxes, clean empty bottles
*old toys - balls, legos, etc.
*anything that sparks your imagination!

The agenda for the night is:

6:30 - check-in, hors d'ouvres, & networking
7:15 - lights, camera, design!
8:30 - program end and closing announcements

Our event is being held at an awesome start-up incubator--Runway--which is in the same building as Twitter, Yammer, and One Kings Lane!

PARKING: parking garage or metered street parking is available nearby. If you do park on the street be sure to read the street parking signs!

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION (recommended): Easiest to get here by BART or MUNI light rail or street cars.

Here are some links for just a few of the many design thinking resources out there...
Stanford's d.school (I suggest digging around on the site. I found some great stuff sort of tucked away on their site).
    dschool.stanford.edu

Charlie Rose interview with David Kelley/IDEO/d.school on 60 Minutes (below the video there are links to other segments that were aired online, not on the show. They filmed hundreds of hours of footage for a 12 minute segment):

Follow up to original 60 Minutes from Tuesday's CBS Morning News-- IDEO design challenge (getting kids to eat healthier food)

David Kelley's 2012 TED Talk on Creative Confidence:

Related, if you search for David Kelley on the TED Talk site, you will find another talk he gave on Human-Centered Design (from around 2002).
    Hope these are helpful!

Nice vids, watched the creative confidence one. Cool to think about that concept applied beyond creativity, just being confident in general about other things.

It was my first design thinking event and I had a great time trying these creative exercises. Thanks for organizing a well thought out event.

Also, as mentioned if anyone wants to find out more about SF+acumen, please check out sf.plusacumen.org for various events supporting Acumen Fund.

Awesome job tonight! I was super impressed with the diversity of solutions created by the group!! Great work and on a Friday night, even! ;) In the spirit of design thinking and prototyping, we would love feedback on tonight's event so we can continue iterating in order to continue improving the experience. I learned so much from all of you. Thank you for a fun and productive Friday night. Cheers!

To answer Jonathan's question: we will not reveal the problem before this event--it's a surprise! The fun is in designing on the spot! However, when we do our 4-Hour Design Volunteer events you'll know ahead who we'll be helping and some of the challenges/goals that org has. Thanks!
