Oscar Nominated Shorts

Hi Everyone,

When it's February, this group is all about the shorts - Oscar ones that is. Shorts are films that are less than 70 minutes in length, although usually these run 5-10 minutes a piece. They are from all over the world, encompass many subjects, and for the animation, many styles of animation.

We will meet at 12:15 for the 1pm show. That is because this event is hugely popular and we will need to be seated by 12:30. Here are some tips for those of you who've not attended before:

  • Follow the link above to buy your ticket in advance. They will sell out.
  • Plan to be attempting to park at 11:45 or noon. It will be busy.
  • Do not park underneath the DIA, for if the garage is still open is owned by the city and closes at 5.
  • The slate of movies (short live action and short animated) can be found here:
    http://www.imdb.com/list/--Aj0TA7c14/
  • This is a long event so dress in layers, and know you can leave after the animated ones, during intermission. I expect it will run 3-4 hours. But it's fun!
  • We will sit as close as we can to our usual spot - main floor, waaay back, center.

We probably won't go out after, because it is a long event. But for those of us who stay all the way through, we can discuss that afterwards.

I really do recommend you see these if you get a chance, either with us or on your own.

Great, thought-provoking films and really nice people who know how to talk about them. it would be fun to vote both on which one we liked best and on which one we think will win. Sorry I couldn't stay for the discussion afterwards.

My vote for animation goes to Head Over Heels, although I thought Guacamole was visually delightful and so creative. Curfew and Asad were my two favs for the live films. I'm guessing one of those two will win.

    Hi Dave,
I really enjoyed chatting with you for the few minutes we had a chance to chat. This was a first for me. First time ever watching a short film, and I have never paid attention to them on the awards show. I have no idea what they are looking for when the select a winner, but will give my vote.
I liked Adam and Dog the best for the animated, with Head Over Heels a close second. I feel like Head Over Heels would win as it seemed a bit more creative.
I liked Curfew the best out of the drama shorts. They were all pretty good to me, except I did not care for the first one with the photographer of death. Maybe in part because I don't think I fully got the message it was portraying.

No more tickets available for the 1:00 so I can't go...unless someone has a single ticket to spare! Maybe next weekend.

    Hi,
Are we meeting any place in particular? This is my first event with this group, so I won't really know anyone. It would help to know where I should look for you.

Dawn-this is a WAY busy event. We will be seated I hope on the main floor at the very back of the center aisle (if not too crowded) by 12:30. It's probably best to look for me there. I will be in the lobby at 12:15, but it will be crowded.

OK, thanks Rebecca. I'll look for you on the main floor, back, center aisle.
