Detroit Unleaded

This is a locally directed film based on an award winning short.  Looks good:

Director Rola Nashef expands her award-winning short film for her feature-length debut, a spirited and engaging comedy-drama set in a small, family-owned inner-city gas station, where a budding romance encounters unexpected obstacles. Forced to take over the family business after the unexpected death of his father, a young Lebanese-American man named Sami (E.J. Assi) finds himself saddled with a lifestyle he never wanted, interfering with his plans for college and complicating his budding romance with a beautiful and very proper young woman (Nada Shouhayib). Exploring race relations, generational differences and economic problems with humanity and wit, Detroit Unleaded is a winningly modest landmark in a new wave of Arab-American filmmaking and one of the year’s most welcome directorial debuts. Discovery Award, Toronto International Film Festival. (92 min.)  -

The best thing about being a Detroit-a-phile is the vibes you get of of being with others who love Detroit too. A packed DFT full of fellow underdog lovers. Yeah. Neat Indie flick with lots of local color. Hope Michael Moore shows it at the Traverse City Film Fest next year.

It was an engaging and goodhearted slice-of-life film with loads of Detroit local color. I became so absorbed that I was almost surprised that it came to an end, as if it wasn't just a film but a real experience of people I knew.

    Hi Everyone

Just a reminder that we will meet in the lobby at 6:45 for a 7:00 showtime. If you are late we usually sit way back, center, main floor. See you tonight.
