Once Were Warriors - New Zealand Maori dysfunctional family situation universally-recognizable! The Godfather Films - The subtlety of Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino is fascinating to watch (what have they devolved into?!) Hotel Rwanda - Don Cheadle's seemingly self-important obsequiousness turned to elegant desperation to help others deserved every award possible! I prefer seeing movies which give me insight to the universality or uniqueness of other cultures, shows me an everyday situation from a different angle or just tells the same onld story in an exciting new way.
"The greatest trick the devil every pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist" - The Usual Suspects "All my life I've had to fight...I loves Harpo but I'll KILL HIM DEAD before I let him beat me!" - The Color Purple "Cheech (as in Ciccio), la porte!" Frank Pentangeli leaving Michael Corleone's office
Any film in which a sole White person enters an ethnic community and single-handedly SAVES it! Pretty much any romantic comedy featuring a ditzy blond, crazy situation and man who pursues without actually pursuing.
I require a film to engage me like in[masked] when I saw The Crying Game at the DFT before it gained wide release. It engaged my critical mind, gave me insight into current politics and challenged me to set my own moral code - hooked ever since!
It was nice seeing some familiar faces (and new ones) after a little summer hiatus!
