Immutable Servers with Docker, Packer and Consul

These days, many operators use tools like Puppet, Salt Stack or Ansible to ensure there is no configuration drift on servers. The next step, is to create static server images with applications already installed and there is no need for change at all: Immutable Servers.

In this meetup, we'll experiment with Packer as a tool for creating static images with everything readily installed. And we'll play around with Consul as a clever tool for managing server configurations without modifying the image. We use Docker as infrastructure because it easily runs on a laptop.

Program:
18:00 - 19:00 diner
19:00 - 21:30 hands-on with Docker, Packer & Consul

Please bring a laptop with boot2docker installed and docker pull debian:wheezy.

    Hi meetup attendees,

Thank you for signing up for tonight's Amsterdam Middleware Borrel meetup on Immutable Servers with Docker, Packer and Consul. We're looking forward to it.

To use the available time as effectively as possible, we wanted to ask you to come prepared. If you bring a laptop with boot2docker already installed, please open boot2docker and download the debian:wheezy image:

    docker pull debian:wheezy

That saves some time during the setup.

We will meet in the back building of Xebia. If you want, you can come there directly. The address is:

    Laapersveld 61, Hilversum

If you have trouble finding the location, please call Adriaan [masked]) or Simon [masked]). We're expecting you starting 6pm for dinner. We'll start with the practical part of the meetup at 7pm.

    See you tonight!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
