DevOps Singapore Meetup #4: Puppet in Production & DevCloud

Session: Puppet In Production

Presenter: Walter Heck (OlinData.com)

Details:

I'll be demo-ing a production puppet environment using stored configs,
exported and virtual resources and high usage of 3rd party open source
puppet modules from github. This repo is in production use on a 30+
server cluster, fully puppetised. They use mcollective as well, but
it's in early stages of depoyment, i'll just quickly show how it
works. I'll run you through the structure of the repository, the way
things are set up and deployed, pretty much everything you wish to
know! After the session there will be room for questions.

This is a unique chance at spying on how others set up a puppet
repository plus the advice from an expert on what to do (and more
importantly: what not to do!), don't miss it!

Session: DevCloud-Enabling developers to automate operations.

Presenter: Ranjib Dey, ThoughtWorks

Details:

DevCloud is a unified platform that provides self serving Git repositories, environments and a Continuous Integration (CI) grid.  Every component inside DevCloud is self aware, maintained via Chef and monitored via Nagios.  I'll be talking about lessons learned, and best practices around infrastructure automation that spans beyond individual nodes and environments and addresses multi tenancy related issues.

Had a lot of fun demoing a production Puppet environment, and talking to the people there!

I think last night was our biggest turnout, so much so that I felt bad that all the pizza and all the drinks were consumed :-( It was great to hear Ranjib talk about how "easy" it is to setup an internal development cloud and then have Walter open up a real "live" puppet configuration for us to observe.
