Mike – I am not a delegate and have not seen any emails on internal party issues.  I do not have a current list of delegates.  It’s very interesting that Vargas may get his pre-endorsement vote challenged and pulled off the consent calendar.

Where does Denise Ducheny stand on single-payer healthcare?  Has she voted for it in the past or at least pledged support?

I will try to get something posted on the Vargas issues this evening and if he votes for it tomorrow, we’ll be sure readers know that too.

You are correct that Vargas has taken a lot of money from the insurance and phama industries.

I plan to attend the convention on a media pass. I’d like to make sure and get a schedule of events and any info that delegates get on schedules, ie the voting on this as a prime example so I can be there to cover it, and also the various parties, receptions etc. Who is the keynote speaker? Which big-name Dems if any will be speaking and when?

Subject: SB810 vote: challenge or "pull" Vargas CD-51 endorsement from Consent Calendar at convention (? really?)

Miriam:

As the chair of Progressive Democrats of America Metro San Diego, I'm getting swamped by emails over the whole thing with Sen Vargas failing to vote for SB 810, the California Universal Health Care Bill -- despite the fact that Universal/single payer health care is part of the California Democratic Party Platform.

Sen Mark Leno is having the bill "reconsidered" on Tuesday 31st (tomorrow) and most folks are expecting Vargas to vote "Aye" this time.

No one has been able to reach his Senate office for a confirmation of that.

What to do in caes of a "no" or another fail-to-vote by Sen Vargas (tantamount to a no at this point)

Some Democrats who are in the newly redrawn 51st Congressional District, where now-Senator Vargas is campaigning for Bob Filner's seat have suggested that the pre-endorsement meeting vote in the 51st, (I did not attend) be "challenged" or "pulled" from the CDP Convention Consent calendar by next Saturday. You've probably seen the email threads going around.

This would mean (as far as I know) that Senator Vargas and the other candidate(s)? in the Democratic party vying for the endorsement of the CDP would have to speak to the entire State Party convention on Feb 11th (conveniently in San Diego) in order to win the nomination, I think, by 60% at least, since neither are incumbents. To my knowledge, only Denise Ducheny is running as a Dem in that CA-51 race -- Bob Filner of course is running for mayor and leaving the Congress -- he was an outstanding HR 676 single-payer health care advocate for the South Bay and Imperial Valley.

This seems like a major effort, and I am very busy with other things pre-convention.  Are you a Delegate to DSCC in the 51st?  I am not -- and I don't really have the time to engage on this -- but let me know how many DSCC delegates have already signed the petition to pull endorsement -- and who those Delegates are, so I can get that list -- and cross-check it for PDA and DFA members who I already know first-name.  I would like to know more, personally, about why Vargas did not support this bill, but I do see that there is a boat-load of insurance and pharma cash in his FEC filings -- $140,000+ if you combine both categories.

In all fairness, I am bcc:ing this message to the Vargas for Congress campaign, so that they can also go back through the 60 member list of Delegates and give their own perspective on the issue. See Daily Kos article on a related push as well.

For reference, look at Cal Democratic Party platform in regards to health care -- single payer is there in black & white.
