ANNOUNCEMENTS
*JESS DURFEE HAS BEEN RE-ELECTED TO THE DNC!!! A huge THANK YOU to each of you for your help on my successful reelection campaign.     In case you're curious. I tied for fifth with 200 votes (72.2%). There were 19 positions up for election. Speaker Perez came in first with 229 votes and the 19th elected person had 152 votes. I was safely in the top tier of the winners. There were a total of 81 candidates. Eighteen of the 19 incumbents ran and were reelected.  Big hugs, Jess
___________________________ * IMPORTANT * San Diego County Democratic Party ALERT *** VOTER ID LAW IN CALIFORNIA ? *** That's right: this week the Republican Party announced plans to pursue a voter ID initiative in our state. It's their latest attempt to win elections through voter suppression and campaign finance loopholes.  They've already put Prop. 32 on the November ballot -- a deceptive move to silence the voices of workers and starve Democratic candidates of funding. A voter ID law would do further harm by making it harder for students, the elderly, and the poor to participate in our democracy.   Please donate to San Diego Democrats today so we can build a stronger organization to beat back these despicable Republican tactics.  Locally, our opponents are fighting to elect an anti-worker zealot as the next Mayor of San Diego. We're gearing up now for that and and other close contests throughout the county. You can help: click here to give $5, $25, or whatever you can afford.     There are just over 100 days left in this race. We're raising money to open offices, equip volunteers, and distribute our official voter guide far and wide. I'm asking you to be one of 100 supporters to launch our "Battleground San Diego" campaign to turn out our voters in November. Please join our cause by making a donation today.   With gratitude,   Jess Durfee Chair, San Diego County Democratic Party Member, Democratic National Committee  Contact: (858)[masked] [address removed] Website: www.sddemocrats.org ___________________________
* MIRAMAR LANDFILL!!!!! City workers scored a victory yesterday when they were recommended to keep the contract that has them running the Miramar Landfill. Their winning bid came as a result of the "managed competition" process that allowed private companies to bid against city workers. Despite standards that were reduced specifically to pave the way for private companies, "private waste firms balked at taking responsibility for strict environmental standards," reports NBC San Diego. City workers have so far won all the competitions with private industry." Quote from voiceofsandiego.org   * ___________________________ *" Governor blasts East County residents: Yesterday, Governor Brown pledged to "crush the opposition" to large power projects planned for our region. The remarks came during an SDG&E celebration of Sunrise Powerlink's completion, held atop a mountain blasted away to build a new substation near Alpine. Read our story in Top News - and be sure to read our editorial titled "The people our Governor wants to crush" in Editorials.   County planners approved a controversial wind ordinance that opens the door for massive wind turbine projects in scenic mountain, rural and desert areas of East County. Supervisors will have the final say. Also on August 8, Supervisors will hold a hearing on Tule Wind proposed for scenic McCain Valley, gateway to two designated wilderness areas, and on the Eco Substation."  Quoted from EAST COUNTY MAGAZINE www.eastcountymagazine.org This week marks several landmark decisions, with more pending that could forever change the character of East County.  www.eastcountymagazine.org __________________________ *Medical Marijuana Patients to Rally Monday at Obama Fundraiser in Oakland, Demand End to Federal Attacks President Obama's visit to Oakland follows aggressive DOJ actions aimed at shutting down city-permitted dispensaries Read More: http://safeaccessnow.org/medical-marijuana-patients-to-rally-monday-at-obama-fundraiser-in-oakland-demand-end-to-federal-attacks

***THUR SEPT 27 at " Planned Parenthood's 21st ANNUAL Stand Down ACTION FUND PARTY in La Jolla" Elections don’t get more critical than this. In fact, the upcoming local and national elections are more important to the future of Planned Parenthood than any other election in recent history. This is our best opportunity to raise funds as we enter the last leg of the 2012 election year. With longtime Planned Parenthood Champion Senator Christine Kehoe as our featured speaker, we’re in for an inspirational and energizing evening. We hope you’ll join us – we need every ounce of support we can get to ensure no one will “get rid of” Planned Parenthood.... Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that.” - Mitt Romney BUY TICKETS TODAY! From local races to the battle for the presidency, support for Planned Parenthood and the reproductive health services it provides have become deciding factors. Many candidates, including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have publicly stated they intend to eliminate all funding for Planned Parenthood, even though most Americans believe providing reproductive health care is vital for our country’s future and should remain nonpartisan. In fact, not only has 1 in 5 American women sought reproductive health care from Planned Parenthood at least once in her lifetime, 69% of Americans oppose cutting federal government funding to Planned Parenthood. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest will commit its resources to elect candidates who will preserve the right to reproductive health care. To contribute to the event at the Honorary Committee level – $1,000 or more – or to purchase individual tickets online, please visit www.ppactionca.org/standnow today!
