*** Restore Majority Rule to CA State Budget Process***

California is one of only three states that has the two-thirds rule. The rule is so crippling, that our legislators have missed the June 15 constitutional deadline 28 of the last 32 years. The rule this year allowed a small minority of legislators to literally hold the state hostage to special interests. The budget standoff threatened money for our schools, roads, and other critical needs of our communities -- at a time when we can least afford it.
A group of former Obama campaign staff and volunteers from California hope to join with other political groups ? including the Courage Campaign ? to gauge and then garner support for a ballot initiative restoring California?s majority rule. We believe this is exactly the kind of change we have been working for on the national level. We need to take what we learned during the historic presidential campaign and use it to begin change here at home.
Please register your support for restoring democracy to California. http://restoremajorityrule.com.

When: Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 7:00pmPlease Join Us on Wednesday, March 18

Dear Friend,
Every day it seems, we read about more bad news coming from Sacramento.

We read about cuts to schools, cuts to colleges and universities, cuts to health care, cuts to transportation projects, cuts and more cuts. But what we don?t see is any sustained attempt to cut out the politics and replace it with the kind of bold and honest leadership we need in Sacramento at this moment of crisis.

That?s why I am inviting you to join me on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00pm at Monroe Clark Middle School for a conversation about California's future.
You can RSVP by replying to this email or by calling (415) 516-1252.

I believe we can ? and must ? demand that our state government start working a whole lot better for us. It?s time we put politics aside to find the best policies for Californians. And that means talking together as Californians about the kind of leadership we need to make change in Sacramento.

Please join us on Wednesday, March 18 as we talk about how to solve California?s most crucial challenges, and how we can all participate in the struggle to get California back on track.

***HOWARD DEAN"S LETTER

Carol -

It's been five years since we started working together to build our movement for change, and Democracy for America is stronger now than ever. We've elected progressives up and down the ballot, we've trained a new generation of activists, and we've changed the course of legislation from state houses to Washington D.C.

It's time to celebrate.

On March 25, DFA members will come together for a nationwide Birthday Party and conference call. I'll be there joining my brother Jim, some special guests, and DFA members across the country to celebrate the past five years and look forward to the successes of the next 50.

Will you host a DFA Birthday Party in your neighborhood?

SIGN UP TO HOST A BIRTHDAY PARTY NOW

Four years ago, your hard work elected me to Chair the Democratic National Committee. While I was there, you never stopped working to make change happen.

Your work has elected over 575 DFA-endorsed progressive candidates to all levels of office. You've held over 50,000 events taking action on everything from protecting Social Security to ending the war in Iraq.

With thousands of phone calls to Congress, you've helped pass important legislation to expand healthcare to 11 million kids. You've delivered hundreds of thousands of petition signatures and DFA even became the first PAC in America to go carbon neutral.

We're not going to stop working now. We're going to celebrate five years of success and look forward to powering DFA for another 50. Can you host a house party to celebrate DFA's 5th Birthday with other DFA members in your neighborhood?

IT'S EASY TO HOST A PARTY, JUST SIGN UP HERE TO LEARN HOW

That's right, hosting a party is easy. Once you sign up, the DFA Field Team will contact you right away with tips on what to do and how to do it. You just need a place to meet big enough for a few friends, a speaker phone or computer with internet to hear the nationwide conference call, and pens and paper to write letters to the editor in support of a healthcare plan that will cover all Americans.

So let's get together on March 25 and have some fun while we continue to make change happen. Hard work deserves its rewards -- and you've earned it.

I look forward to celebrating with you.

-Howard

Governor Howard Dean, MD
Founder, Democracy for America

P.S. Yesterday I sent you a message to say how excited I am to be coming back to DFA. Your response has been tremendous. It's clear DFA members understand we still have a lot of work ahead of us. Please chip in today and make sure we have the resources to get the job done.

Subject: 2009 Democratic Party Convention Needs Volunteers

Dear Eleanor,
The California Democratic Party has always relied on the involvement of grassroots activists and volunteers to make our Democratic Party what it is. Without your energy, time and dedication we would not have achieved the many Democratic victories up and down California as well as the historic election of President Barack Obama.
We must keep the energy going! Our State Convention depends on the overwhelming turnout of our dedicated volunteers and we need your help again at our

2009 State Convention April 24- 26 in Sacramento.
www.cadem.org/volunteer09

We will need more than 800 volunteers to facilitate a productive and enjoyable convention for the approximately 3,500 delegates, guests and press in attendance. Volunteers are needed in several areas ? some assignments will require sitting while others may involve standing or acting as a runner. Please let us know as soon as possible if you have any special needs and/or physical limitations. Please also tell us if you have any special skills that might be useful, especially skills like photography or videography. We will do our best to position you within your ability and interest.
This year, our volunteers will help make the 2009 Convention a successful tribute to the 13 years of leadership and service of Senator Art Torres, outgoing Chairman of the California Democratic Party. Many statewide constitutional officers and legislative leaders will attend to help make this an exciting and memorable event. There will be opportunities for volunteers to attend General Session and to hear some of our great speakers after their shift!
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the volunteer form by March 20, 2009 for best availability. If you have any questions, please contact Christopher ----Guerrero, Volunteer Director at (916)[masked] or email [address removed].
Please note: In order to volunteer at the State Convention you must sign-up in advance. There will be a mandatory meeting for all volunteers on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Convention Center in Sacramento.
I look forward to seeing you at the Convention.
Sincerely,
Kathy Bowler
Executive Director, California Democratic Party
P.S. Every year Chairman Torres celebrates the public service of two notable young Democrats with the JFK, Jr. Award. If you would like to nominate outstanding young Democrats in your community please go to www.cadem.org/2009JFKJrAward to submit your nominations by April 7th.
