Equality California volunteers and staff will be working the booth at Pride, collecting signatures in support of the Youth Equality Act -- a bill that would put an end to special tax rewards given to any youth organization that discriminates against LGBT youth and families. By now you have probably heard that the Boy Scouts recently voted to allow openly gay youth to serve as scouts until they turn 18, at which point they kick them out. They also continue to exclude trans youth completely. This continued discrimination against LGBT people is wrong, and the Boy Scouts should not be rewarded with taxpayer dollars until they lift the expiration date they have placed on gay youth in Scouting. The Youth Equality Act stands for full equality and nothing less -- and you can help make it law! If you would like to volunteer with Equality California at San Diego Pride on Saturday, July 13 or Sunday, July 14, send me an email or give me a call at[masked]-0405.

This year we're shifting the emphasis to a celebration of San Diego's neighborhoods -- where they're at and where they're headed.  The event is Saturday, August 3, and you’ll hear a lot more about it over the next several weeks.  And we're doing something special for the Idea Tournament this year.  Instead of individuals competing for the most innovative solution to a local problem, we’re inviting community groups to vie for funding of a worthwhile neighborhood project.  The winner will be awarded a $5,000 grant to fund that project presented by our partners at the Malin Burnham Center for Civic Engagement.  We invite you and your community to band together to present your idea, whether it’s a community garden, a needed design for a special new park or monument, a new streetlight or a much-needed crosswalk. Why are we fighting for Clean Elections for the City of San Diego? Here are some reasons why clean elections would empower our city's neighborhoods and all San Diegans! ----- Clean Elections will get City Hall to pay attention to neighborhoods! ----- Clean Elections makes elected officials accountable to voters, not donors! ----- Clean Elections means that the best candidates, not just the wealthiest candidates, can pursue  elected office!  
How would Clean Elections Work? ----- Clean Elections wishing to run"Clean", would have to collect 500 individual        $5 contributions for the Clean Money Fund, from registered voters. ----- They would have to agree to accept no campaign money from donors. ----- They would have to agree to spend no campaign money from their own pocket.

Reply-To:  Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility <[address removed]> A4NR kicks off the 4th of July by tossing a lit firecracker under the door at PG&E's headquarters in San Francisco....with the filing of our legal brief on the inability of Diablo Canyon to meet its seismic design basis-our testimony is quite the read-filled with confidential internal memos and covert emails between PG&E and the NRC. Add this to your summer thriller list: (http://a4nr.org/?p=2758).     It appears Diablo Canyon cannot meet its original seismic safety design basis after the discovery of the Shoreline Fault, and it will take a major breach of law to prevent a likely premature retirement of DCPP.  A4NR is questioning what we see as the cover up of this important issue.  The New Times did an excellent job of covering this design conundrum: http://www.newtimesslo.com/news/9668/calculational-garbage/ And an editorial: http://www.newtimesslo.com/shredder/9677/regulatory-meltdown/ At the same time, we are saddened to announce legislation sponsored by A4NR - the Nuclear Energy Planning and Responsibility Act (SB 418) - was defeated in an Assembly committee vote.   Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (the bill's author) never wavered for a moment-she and her staff gave it her "Hannah-Best" effort.  Former Senator Sam Blakeslee made his first appearance in Sacramento to support our bill, and former California Energy Commissioner (and A4NR attorney) John Geesman made excellent arguments. Both The Utility Reform Network (TURN) and the Division of Ratepayer Advocates (DRA) were there in support.  We thank each of these individuals and organizations and are grateful for the time they took to protect ratepayers.   Only Assemblyman Paul Fong voted "yes" at the hearing, with assembly members Nancy Skinner and Das Williams of Santa Barbara adding their "yes" votes while the roll call was still open. Assemblyman Bill Quirk (yep, his real name) is a nuclear physicist who believes the NRC is infallible and the CPUC over-regulated. He was the only member of the committee who volunteered opposing comments and his voice carried weight with so many newly elected representatives.     Other committee members bought into PG&E's story that they had already covered the seismic, waste storage and water impacts in their unsuccessful 2010 application for license renewal.  A4NR found PG&E's argument puzzling as their last study was done  a year before Fukushima and the NRC's new waste policy, so the costs of both events were unknown at the time.  Finally, Scott Wetch, lobbying for the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and other trade unions stated that their legal analysis showed that this bill would have curtailed current capital improvement projects at the plant, causing massive layoffs. This is not true, and their legal analysis (and its conclusions) somehow never found its way into the legislative background the assembly committee prepared for its members regarding this bill.  If you've seen it, please let us know!!   A4NR won round one with the dismissal of PG&E's 2010 application to fund their license renewal.  PG&E won round two with the demise of SB 418, but we will continue to educate these elected officials at every opportunity.  As all of you know this has been, and will continue to be a long fight, but A4NR is in it to win and we only get stronger.   Next up: Senator Padilla's hearing on "Life without SONGS" will be July 10th in Sacramento, and July 11th Independent Panel for PG&E's seismic studies meets in San Francisco.  A4NR will be at both events, continuing to voice ratepayer concerns. On July 15th we will attend (and our attorney will be on the panel) for the California Energy Commission/CPUC/ISO meeting on SONGS decommissioning and transition to non-nuclear generation in Southern California.   Please continue to join our efforts. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/31/13. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.   Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career.
The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.   If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Many of you might know me as a co-founder of Creative Commons, and as the founder of Rootstrikers.  But I was not the first among us #Rootstrikers.

It was Aaron Swartz who initially persuaded me that none of us were going to make progress on a wide range of issues — from Internet freedom to climate change — until we found a way to address the corruption of our government.  As I recounted in a lecture after Aaron's death, that was in January 2007.  Six months later, I announced that I was putting my work on Free Culture aside, and taking up the challenge of building a movement to fight that corruption.

For the first couple years, Aaron worked with me — first, as a founding board member of Change Congress, and then with Fix Congress First! But the urgency and opportunity of an Obama presidency led him away from a fight focused on corruption alone. That led to the birth of Demand Progress; Fix Congress First! then became Rootstrikers.

Today, I am incredibly honored and happy to let you know that these organizations have now joined leadership to become allies in our respective fights for a better, truer democracy.  Rootstrikers will be the campaign finance reform project of Demand Progress, continuing to the work to bring more people into the movement to end the corruption in our politics. Demand Progress will help support that work, as it continues its own.
