Re: [dfa-23] Hi! I Love Heated Discussions! Regarding to the Topic of Bob Filner Crisis, I want everyone to speak and write their views freely. Just be careful of the words you write in regards to someone's view. An example is below. OKAY? ~ NOW ~

It concerns me when members of the DFA are not respectful of the views of others in discussions regarding Bob Filner. There are those of us who believe in due process and that someone should not be prosecuted by the press, particularly a Manchester press.  We should not be shut down by fellow DFA members who call us “hypocrites” for believing that someone is innocent until proven guilty.

Ironically, because the Democratic brand has been one that espouses to promote freedom of speech, tolerance and respect for others, shutting down and insulting those who don’t agree with a particular point of view seems to be the true hypocrisy.  We need to protect DFA as a safe and supportive place for civilized discussion by concerned citizens – not one where legitimate discussions are shut down for a specific agenda.

A further irony is that the very person who is calling us hypocrites came to DFA telling us that we need to be prepared as the special interests will be coming up with a variety of assaults to get Filner out of office.  Now that their prediction has come true it sounds like they weren’t really prepared to examine their own previous concerns.

I attended a meeting called by the same persons last Saturday. Shortly before the meeting they sent out an email telling persons not to attend if they did not agree that Filner should resign.  I didn’t receive that email until after I returned from the meeting. Had I received it beforehand, Peter and I and the 3 individuals I personally invited and urged to come would not have been there.  That would have left the 2 persons who called the meeting as the only attendees.  That would have assured there was no dissention - but is that what we want in our Democratic Party?  What happened to the Big Tent?

When Democrats throw other Democrats under the bus and promote divisions in the party they are doing the Republicans divide and conquer work for them.  The Republican operatives must be laughing up their sleeves and the special interests will be laughing all the way to the bank.

We need to get our act together - we need to respect each others views and unite instead of divide if we ever hope to achieve the just society we claim to be working for.

Subject: [dfa-23] Hi! I Love Heated Discussions! Regarding to the Topic of Bob Filner Crisis, I want everyone to speak and write their views freely. Just be careful of the words you write in regards to someone's view. An example is below. OKAY? ~ NOW ~ LET'

An Example:

When I have tried to speak about in support Bob Filner not resigning, I have been HIT with the label of being " a Hypocrite "!

The first time this was said to me, it really surprised me and puzzled me.  I feel I should be able to state my opinions without being called a hypocrite.

This kind of name calling is a tactic, I do not agree with when discussing the Bob Filner Crisis.

Calling someone a hypocrite, stop the discussion altogether.

Maybe, that, is/was, why it is said.

I want to be able to state my opinions, statements, without having to stop the main topic of discussion, to defend myself from being called a hypocrite.

Hypocrite has been stated by several of my progressive & democratic friends or members, I feel that I must speak up.

Accusing someone of being a hypocrite, should require more thought and evidence, than just speaking about not wanting Bob to resign.

I am not big on name calling, and/or,  make such judgments of friends and people I might disagree with...    I say ' might' because my mind is not make up.

To me, to ask someone to resign is a big decision.

Those that have come on quickly, have had enough time and evidence for them to come to this decision.  I haven't.  That is all.

Many who, first asked for his resignation, have had more time, and more evidence, and more information.

I have not had the privilege to see or hear or decide.  I respect their decision.

There are a lot of consequences to demanding someone to resign.  Not the least of these, is having Todd Gloria being Mayor temporarily, is one of my concerns.

Think about it...

Carol

From another Dem Member:

Anyway, that is not the issue here.  The issue is the campaign to remove Mayor Filner.  If that happens, who should we be working for to replace him, etc? The “Divide and Conquer” tactics of Atwater and Rove should have no place in our gatherings.  We need to unite, not reduce ourselves to childish bickering, with the playground name-calling and the like.  This weakens our party and our vision. No doubt setting us up to fight among ourselves was a desired side effect of this fiasco.  Let’s not fall into that trap, but use our time and energy for positive good.
