Our signature conservation event brings together representatives of Audubon’s 35,000 members and 44 chapters with conservation leaders, scientists, educators and policy makers. Through nature-inspired walking workshops, inspiring speakers and thought-provoking learning sessions, Audubon plans to join together people of all ages and backgrounds in our common interest of protecting Florida's remarkable natural resources.  Assembly 2013 Schedule Outline  Information on walking workshops, keynote speakers, special presentations, and more will be revealed in coming weeks. Be sure to bookmark our website or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Friday Learning Sessions  This year's Audubon Assembly is focusing on the network of grassroots conservationists who are out in the field making a difference for Florida's environment. After our kick-off lunch on Friday, you will have the opportunity to participate in three different breakout sessions. Each session will run twice, so you will have an opportunity to experience two in their entirety. Our Citizen Science leaders are working hard to put together programs that will engage and inspire you. Each session will feature cutting-edge scientists, biologists, conservationists, and leaders from across Florida. Stay tuned for the latest information as it becomes available.

Boots on the Ground for Advocacy: Time spent in Florida’s special places and volunteer bird stewardship instills participants with a personal experience of the vital need for conservation. And when people speak from a place of personal experience with Florida’s lands, water, and wildlife they are powerful conservation advocates at multiple levels of government policy-making. In this session, learn how to cultivate leadership in your advocacy efforts. Boots on the Ground for Citizen Science: Whether it’s Florida Scrub-Jays, beach-nesting birds, sea turtles, or wading bird rookeries, data collected by trained citizen scientists provides information vital to habitat management. Join us for a discussion of the components of a successful citizen science program, volunteer recruitment and retention, and the ways in which these programs support conservation in Florida.

Boots on the Ground for Habitat Stewardship: When it comes to habitat stewardship, there is no substitute for a team of engaged, passionate and knowledgeable individuals willing to pull on their boots and apply themselves to a conservation challenge. Stewardship takes many forms; from tackling invasive species to applying prescribed fire, or even working to re-establish native species. These essential tasks are performed routinely throughout our state by committed staff and volunteer from a host of different entities all working toward the common cause of conservation.

This session will showcase a handful of these important and effective habitat stewardship strategies. This year's Assembly will be held in Palm Harbor at the beautiful Innisbrook hotel, only minutes from some very exciting options for our not-to-be-missed morning excursions! (more information will be available as we get closer to the event date). The hotel is located about a half hour from downtown Tampa.  Assembly officially begins Friday morning, October 25, and runs until 2 pm on Saturday, October 26.  YOU MUST BOOK YOUR HOTEL ROOM SEPERATELY: Call[masked] (mention you are with Audubon Florida) and book by October 3 to reserve your group rate room! Group rate is $129 a night.   Check this page often for the latest on what is sure to be the best Assembly yet!   `

MESSAGE FROM CARL MANASTER: Subject: Petition delivered to Scott Peters

Reply-To: "Carl Manaster" <[address removed]>

Thanks for signing my petition to Congressman Scott Peters asking him to explain his vote against Obamacare. I delivered the petition today at lunch; although I didn't meet with Peters himself, I talked to a staff member who explained that  Peters understood the bill to be strictly about delaying the individual mandate by a year, and that he felt that was fair given that the mandate for large companies was delayed by that amount. He made clear that Peters has gotten the message that many of his constituents are upset about this vote and I have the impression he will be taking that into consideration for future votes. He also said I may recieve a prepared response on the subject; if so of course I will share it with you.  Thanks again!

--Carl Manaster

★ # 2. ★ ★ ★ " UPDATE ON FRACKING: It's really hard to believe, but fracking is not illegal here. " Please read this and sign the petition at this link (and forward/share this with others in San Diego County.  Ask them to please do the same): (There are) "plans to massively expand fracking in a huge section of the state--roughly 1,750 square miles from Southern to Central California, from Modesto to San Diego County."  Cities and counties in California have broad authority to ban fracking, and we should pressure our elected officials to step in where the state government has so far failed to act.  Local bans on fracking may also be one of the most effective strategies for winning change at the state level. If a wave of cities and counties in California reject fracking, it will put increased pressure on Governor Brown to ban fracking in all of California.  Hundreds of communities across the country, from New York and New Mexico, to Pennsylvania, Ohio and Colorado, have successfully passed local bans or moratoriums on fracking in order to protect their homes and pressure state officials to act.

Dear Carol,

The Koch brothers confirmed that they are no longer attempting to purchase the Tribune company newspapers! To celebrate, we put together a re-cap of the campaign:

22,117 Forecast the Facts' members signed the petition, including you.

We beat our petition goal!

Combined with petition signatures from the Save Our News Coalition, we totaled over 500,000 signatures.

We delivered them to Tribune Company newspapers in 12 cities across the country, from Los Angeles...

LA protest Baltimore.

Baltimore protest

We took out ads in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times to place pressure on key decision-makers.

Bruce Karsh and Howard Marks Ad

We imagined what the world might look like with a Koch-owned newspaper.

Kochify the News!

It wasn't pretty.

Climate Change to Add More of What we Love to All Our Favorite Areas

While this is a time to celebrate, we cannot stop the fight.

People celebrating in Times Square.

There are more climate foes looking to buy the papers.

Rupert Murdoch is one possible buyer of Tribune Co. papers

So, let's enjoy this win, but keep our eyes open.

Polar bear looking at you.

And remember: when we stand together, raise our voices, and get a little creative—we can win against the deniers and form a better climate future.

Our entire team and especially our interns, Trevor and Claire, thank you:

Subject:  FIREWORKS AT 77 BEALE STREET!! Reply-To:  Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility <[address removed]>

A4NR kicks off the 4th of July by tossing a lit firecracker under the door at PG&E's headquarters in San Francisco....with the filing of our legal brief on the inability of Diablo Canyon to meet its seismic design basis-our testimony is quite the read-filled with confidential internal memos and covert emails between PG&E and the NRC. Add this to your summer thriller list: (     It appears Diablo Canyon cannot meet its original seismic safety design basis after the discovery of the Shoreline Fault, and it will take a major breach of law to prevent a likely premature retirement of DCPP.  A4NR is questioning what we see as the cover up of this important issue.  The New Times did an excellent job of covering this design conundrum: And an editorial: At the same time, we are saddened to announce legislation sponsored by A4NR - the Nuclear Energy Planning and Responsibility Act (SB 418) - was defeated in an Assembly committee vote.   Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (the bill's author) never wavered for a moment-she and her staff gave it her "Hannah-Best" effort.  Former Senator Sam Blakeslee made his first appearance in Sacramento to support our bill, and former California Energy Commissioner (and A4NR attorney) John Geesman made excellent arguments. Both The Utility Reform Network (TURN) and the Division of Ratepayer Advocates (DRA) were there in support.  We thank each of these individuals and organizations and are grateful for the time they took to protect ratepayers.   Only Assemblyman Paul Fong voted "yes" at the hearing, with assembly members Nancy Skinner and Das Williams of Santa Barbara adding their "yes" votes while the roll call was still open. Assemblyman Bill Quirk (yep, his real name) is a nuclear physicist who believes the NRC is infallible and the CPUC over-regulated. He was the only member of the committee who volunteered opposing comments and his voice carried weight with so many newly elected representatives.     Other committee members bought into PG&E's story that they had already covered the seismic, waste storage and water impacts in their unsuccessful 2010 application for license renewal.  A4NR found PG&E's argument puzzling as their last study was done  a year before Fukushima and the NRC's new waste policy, so the costs of both events were unknown at the time.  Finally, Scott Wetch, lobbying for the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and other trade unions stated that their legal analysis showed that this bill would have curtailed current capital improvement projects at the plant, causing massive layoffs. This is not true, and their legal analysis (and its conclusions) somehow never found its way into the legislative background the assembly committee prepared for its members regarding this bill.  If you've seen it, please let us know!!   A4NR won round one with the dismissal of PG&E's 2010 application to fund their license renewal.  PG&E won round two with the demise of SB 418, but we will continue to educate these elected officials at every opportunity.  As all of you know this has been, and will continue to be a long fight, but A4NR is in it to win and we only get stronger.   Next up: Senator Padilla's hearing on "Life without SONGS" will be July 10th in Sacramento, and July 11th Independent Panel for PG&E's seismic studies meets in San Francisco.  A4NR will be at both events, continuing to voice ratepayer concerns. On July 15th we will attend (and our attorney will be on the panel) for the California Energy Commission/CPUC/ISO meeting on SONGS decommissioning and transition to non-nuclear generation in Southern California.   Please continue to join our efforts. This is a long road, but having your support is vital to maintain our ability to keep the public's voice before these decision makers.  Persistence!   In Peace, Rochelle [address removed]
