Upcoming San Diego for Democracy meeting

A former member
This is a reminder that there will be elections and an organizational
meeting of San Diego for Democracy tomorrow, 6pm Thursday Feb 16, at the
Joyce Beers Community Center, 1230 Cleveland Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.

Charlie Imes announced this meeting at our last month's DFA meetup.

Charlie also raised the issue of whether San Diego for Democracy, and our
DFA group should apply to the San Diego Democratic Party for charter a
a Democratic Club.

Many people have expressed concern about our DFA group becoming a
Democratic Club. Some people see it as a chance to influence the
direction of the Democratic Party. Others feel that it would damage our
outreach to non-Democrats and restrict our agenda.

There are many opinions on the issue. After some discussions our DFA
steering committee had with Charlie he agreed to postpone any official
action until our meetup group had plenty of time to discuss things. If
you have opinions on the issue, one way or the other, you are encouraged
to attend this upcoming meeting.

On the issue of becoming a Democratic Club limiting our outreach to non Democrats, while it's true that membership is limited to registered Democrats, I have never seen non Democrats turned away. In fact, I have seen several guests identify themselves as active Republicans, (usuall attending with a spouse). Forming a club would also allow more direct input to the Democratic Party.
