Action Items for San Diego DFA Meetup

A former member
The June meetup of San Diego for Democracy was extremely productive, and we had a great response to a number of our on-going activities. One of the upcoming events is a conference on "Defending Democracy," co-sponsored with California Common Cause. Please see the details at the end of this email (or check our "Events" board), and make every effort to support this excellent conference, either with your attendance or by volunteering to help.

We also need your help on other matters:

*DFA is actively trying to recruit candidates for local offices so that Republicans no longer go unchallenged. If you have any interest in running for office--or know someone who does--please contact Leon Thompson at or 619-316-0657.
*phone cards for our disabled troops in hospital will be collected at the July 6 meetup, so please bring any that you feel you can contribute.
*For those with high-school age children--or for those who are concerned about a potential draft of other kids--please consider joining the Mainstreet Moms organization, which is fighting the reporting of confidential student information to the Pentagon, as required by the "No Child Left Behind Act." *The Frye for Mayor desperately needs your donations and volunteer efforts. Drop by Donna's campaign office on the corner of 30th and Meade, or visit:

"Defending Democracy"
This all-day, nonpartisan conference is being organized by California Common Cause at the Mission Hills Unitarian Church. Topics of discussion will include Campaign finance reform, clean elections campaigns, black-box voting, redistricting, and other issues vital to a clean, functioning democracy. Speakers from both parties will be present; Democrats will be represented by our own Rep. Bob Filner.

When: Saturday, June 25, 2005, 9:00 AM to 5:00 pm

Where: Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego
4190 Front St.
San Diego, CA 92103

Event fee: $20.00 per person Includes lunch

Notes: Volunteers are needed, and for young people, service hours will be acknowledged with a letter
