***SAT SEPT 8 at 4-10 pm *Artistic Festival ~ Festival El Alamar es de Todos.* Help us to protect Tijuana's land and water against maquiladoras' pollution * Woodpecker near Arroyo Alamar * Participate in the Citizen Petition For years, the residents of these neighborhoods together with environmental collectives have demanded a rehabilitation of the Arroyo Alamar and the preservation of her forested area. Tijuana needs lots of green zones, clean public recreational spaces for families, and natural systems that mitigate the industrial pollution. But the government of Tijuana has other plans. A highway is built. It will link a new Tijuana/San Diego international gate and new industrial parks in Tijuana. Hundreds of families have been removed and the Arroyo Alamar is been destroyed. We demand that communities are taken into consideration regarding decisions that will affect our quality of life. Yes to development, but sustainable. We work to increase awareness of climate change and advocate for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In September 2011 we brought together hundreds of San Diego County residents, and we collectively called on our elected representatives to take immediate, strong action on climate change as part of 350.org’s international day of action on climate change. Our organization’s values include: action-oriented; teamwork; collaboration; shared-leadership; respect for people; and peaceful demonstrations. We’re San Diegans from different communities, of different ages, working or studying in different fields – some of us are retired – who have come together to say, “Enough is enough. Global climate change is real. We must have a clean energy future. We must start NOW.” We are SanDiego350.org. Join us. *Where: DUDEK (On Front of Building & DUDEK is the Name environmental org.) ***THUR SEPT 27 at 5:30 PM - 7:30PM " PLANNED PARENTHOOD'S 21st ANNUAL Stand Down ACTION FUND PARTY with STATE SENATOR CHRISTINE KEHOE in La Jolla" Elections don’t get more critical than this. In fact, the upcoming local and national elections are more important to the Future of Planned Parenthood than any other election in recent history. This is our best opportunity to raise funds as we enter the last leg of the 2012 election year. With longtime Planned Parenthood Champion Senator Christine Kehoe as our featured speaker, we’re in for an inspirational and energizing evening. We hope you’ll join us – we need every ounce of support we can get to ensure no one will “get rid of” Planned Parenthood.... Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that.” - Mitt Romney BUY TICKETS TODAY! www.ppactionca.org/standnow From local races to the battle for the presidency, support for Planned Parenthood and the reproductive health services it provides have become deciding factors. Many candidates, including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have publicly stated they intend to eliminate all funding for Planned Parenthood, even though most Americans believe providing reproductive health care is vital for our country’s future and should remain nonpartisan. In fact, not only has 1 in 5 American women sought reproductive health care from Planned Parenthood at least once in her lifetime, 69% of Americans oppose cutting federal government funding to Planned Parenthood. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest will commit its resources to elect candidates who will preserve the right to reproductive health care. **********************ANNOUNCEMENTS*******************

*MAJOR VICTORIES* FOR VOTING RIGHTS!*** In Ohio, Texas and Florida ... Federal judge restores early voting in OHIO— A federal judge ordered the battleground state of Ohio to open its polling places three days before the Nov. 6 election, giving a victory to the Obama campaign and marking the sixth ruling in recent weeks to block or void new voting rules set by Republican-dominated state legislatures. -- TEXAS -- U.S. court on Thursday blocked a Texas law that would require voters to show photo identification before casting ballots, saying the measure would likely curtail the ability of minorities to vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election. FLORIDA -- Scott (R) had hamstrung non-partisan groups like the League of Women Voters from registering voters leading up to the November election. U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle said he would grant a motion to permanently remove the restrictions as soon as he receives confirmation that a federal appellate court had dismissed the case.

* Major Victory! More than two years after the management at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton first locked out its workers while they were trying to negotiate a fair contract, National Labor Relations Board Administrative Law Judge Clifford Anderson this week ruled that the lockout was, in fact, illegal. The judge recommended that the NLRB order Castlewood to reinstate the locked out workers and pay them the two years of back wages in benefits they lost during the lockout. “We’ve been saying for two years that Castlewood wasn’t giving us a fair chance to get our jobs back. Now Judge Anderson is saying the same thing,” said Castlewood cook Carlos Mejia. “I hope this will be a wake-up call to the golfers that they need to stop stalling and put us back to work.”

* Southern California Kaiser Nurses Ratify First Contract ~ A year after voting to join United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP), the Specialty Care Nurses of Southern California (SCNSC) and Kaiser Permanente Midwives and Wound Ostomy Nurses (KPMWON) ratified their first contract earlier this month. The new UNAC/UHCP members are now part of the 95,000 member-strong Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, under the recently-ratified Kaiser National Agreement. The new contract ensures that the workers will have a voice in patient care; it also protects their retirement and health benefits, and provides wage incentives that reward longevity.

* For Voting Rights Advocates As California Legislature Approves Election Day Registration As voter suppression laws spread across the country, Voting Rights Advocates Can Take Heart: the biggest state in the nation is on the cusp of passing a major voter protection initiative. Election Day Registration (EDR), which allows citizens to register up to and on Election Day, passed the California State Senate today by a party-line vote of 23-13. AB 1436 had passed the State Assembly in May 47-26. Under current law, Californians cannot register to vote in the final two weeks before an election, just as many Americans are beginning to tune in. EDR will eliminate that deadline, ensuring that no citizen is disenfranchised because he or she wasn’t registered beforehand.

*Senate Votes to Extend Protections to Tens of Thousands of Warehouse Workers ~ AB1855
“Fly-by-night contractors dominate the warehousing industry and provide a buffer between retailers like Walmart and the workers who move their goods,” said Guadalupe Palma, a campaign director with Warehouse Workers United, an organization committed to improving warehousing jobs in the Inland Empire. “We have seen it many times where staffing agencies that supply workers in warehouses will disappear overnight and leave workers without a job and without a paycheck. AB 1855 will help end this practice.”

The Main surprise to me was that Ronald (trickle down) Reagan was not named the absolute best President of all time. Somehow Franklin Roosevelt made the list. I expected George W. Bush, but was not expecting Both Bushes(?). Note that there is only one Democrat among the best and one Republican among the worst. ***5 Best Presidents (UT-8/26/2012): Abraham Lincoln (Republican) George Washington (Declined to State) :-) Ronald Reagan (Republican) Franklin D.
