***TUES SEPT 18 at 2:00PM *****Join Us Tuesday! " San Diego Support the passage of the Abandoned Property Ordinance " We have a unique opportunity over the next several weeks to pass a package of three ordinances that will keep our neighborhoods clean and safe, and protect our neighborhoods, starting with this Tuesday. Get ready for a City Council Double Header. •#1 - Tuesday, September 18 at 2pm San Diego City Council, 202 C Street, 12th Floor • #2 - Tuesday, September 18 at 6pm San Diego City Council, 202 C Street, 12th Floor, San Diego at 6pm Support the passage of the Responsible Banking Ordinance RSVP on facebook On Tuesday, we'll have an opportunity to pass the first two pieces of the package: • The Abandoned Property Ordinance, sponsored by Councilmember Todd Gloria will strengthen existing code around securing abandoned properties and holding owners accountable for keeping our neighborhoods clean. • The Responsible Banking Ordinance, sponsored by Council President Tony Young, would require banks doing business with the city to disclose local data in areas such as lending, foreclosures and service to minority communities, which would be reviewed by a community-based committee. This would provide needed leverage to push banks to better serve our communities. #3. The third piece of this critical package of bills is the Property Value Protection Ordinance, sponsored by Councilmember David Alvarez, would require banks to register with the city when they take action to foreclose a home, and then levy a fine of $1000 a day if the responsible bank doesn’t keep the property up to code. This is expected to be brought to the City Council in October. On Tuesday, we'll be going to both of these meetings and letting the council know that we need to pass all three pieces of legislation to keep our neighborhoods clean and safe, and protect our neighborhoods from reckless behavior by Wall Street Banks. We look forward to seeing you Tuesday! And to fuel an EV, you'll pay the equivalent of 75 cents per gallon of gas, and next to nothing in maintenance. This is our best opportunity to raise funds as we enter the last leg of the 2012 election year. With longtime Planned Parenthood Champion Senator Christine Kehoe as our featured speaker, we’re in for an inspirational and energizing evening. Many candidates, including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have publicly stated they intend to eliminate all funding for Planned Parenthood, even though most Americans believe providing reproductive health care is vital for our country’s future and should remain nonpartisan. In fact, not only has 1 in 5 American women sought reproductive health care from Planned Parenthood at least once in her lifetime, 69% of Americans oppose cutting federal government funding to Planned Parenthood. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest will commit its resources to elect candidates who will preserve the right to reproductive health care. SAN DIEGO, CA (September 14, 2012) – Ray Lutz filed suit on Sept. 13, 2012, for a false arrest which occurred on November 29, 2011, while Lutz was in the middle of registering voters in San Diego's Civic Center Plaza, well known as the town square of San Diego.

Case #37-2012-00103865-CU-CR-CTL was filed and assigned to Judge Denton. Attorney Bryan Pease is handling the case. No trial date has been set at this point. The suit named three defendants explicily: a) the City of San Diego, b) Police officer Tony Lessa, who arrested Lutz, and c) CBRE, "CB Richard Ellis Group" that manages the Civic Center Plaza Office Building and that performed a citizen's arrest for trespassing. The suit also names 25 John Does to allow for additional defendants to be named as determined by discovery.

Complete information about the case can be found on this web page:

San Diego City Council, 202 C Street, 12th Floor, San Diego

#2 Tuesday, September 18 at 6pm
San Diego City Council, 202 C Street, 12th Floor, San Diego at 6pm
Support the passage of the Responsible Banking Ordinance

RSVP on facebook by clicking here

On Tuesday, we'll have an opportunity to pass the first two pieces of the package:

•    The Abandoned Property Ordinance, sponsored by Councilmember Todd Gloria will strengthen existing code around securing abandoned properties and holding owners accountable for keeping our neighborhoods clean.

Brown Bag Lunch Vigil - Rep. Susan Davis - CA-53 Our September BBLV asks include: Bring on the Robin Hood Tax!
Office of Rep. Susan Davis
2700 Adams Avenue Suite 102
San Diego , CA

Death and Taxes (but not in that order)!

Dear Carol,

Please join us for our Brown Bag Lunch Vigil Wednesday September 19 at the office of Rep. Susan Davis at noon. Register for the Vigil and see map and directions here.

Our September BBLV asks include:

Bring on the Robin Hood Tax!

On Monday September 17, Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Keith Ellison and co-sponsors expect to introduce the "Inclusive Prosperity Tax". The Robin Hood Tax, also known as the Financial Speculation Tax (FST), would generate hundreds of billions of dollars. That money could provide funding for jobs to kick-start the economy and get America back on its feet. It could help save the social safety net in the US and around the world. And it will come from fairer taxation of the financial sector.

See more information here: Why Support the Robin Hood Tax? | Listen to National Nurses United Political Director Ken Zinn discuss the Robin Hood Tax with PDA's Economic and Social Justice teamhere. | Read a fact sheet on the Robin Hood tax here.

NO War with Iran! While the warmongers rage, we keep our heads.

Go to our BBLV page here for additional legislation we are asking our Representatives to support.

Dear Carol,

First, strong fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards, and now a celebration of electric vehicles -- sometimes the fight to protect our climate can feel discouraging, but not right now!

For the last few weeks, Sierra Club supporters have been celebrating the new fuel efficiency and carbon pollution standards that mark President Obama's biggest climate accomplishment. Over 50,000 of us have sent thank you letters to the White House. But there's more work to do, and with it, more good news.

Sunday, September 23, is National Plug In Day, a nationwide celebration of electric vehicles (EVs) and what they mean for our environment. By turning their back on the pump, these vehicles are a huge step toward moving America beyond oil and cutting pollution. On the 23rd, Sierra Club supporters in over 60 cities across the country will be taking part in free events to check out electric vehicles, have fun, and help the climate.

One of the Plug In Day events is in San Diego, and you're invited -- learn more here and RSVP today!

WHAT: National Plug In Day

WHEN: Sunday, September 23, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: California Center for Sustainable Energy
8690 Balboa Ave., Suite 100
San Diego, CA 92123 [Map]

A switch to EVs is an important part of our economic future, and an important solution to climate disruption. Every year, we burn roughly 121 billion gallons of oil in our passenger cars and trucks -- and even after taking into account the electricity used to charge EVs, these are almost always the cleanest cars around, and are getting even cleaner. And to fuel an EV, you'll pay the equivalent of 75 cents per gallon of gas, and next to nothing in maintenance.

The event will include: EV display vehicles, charging infrastructure spotlights, press conferences, EV presentations, informational tables, opportunities to learn from your neighbors about what it's like to be an EV owner and more. Lunch will be provided for registered guests.

RSVP now to join us in San Diego next Sunday for National Plug In Day. Even if you don't plan to purchase a new car for years, this is a great chance to have fun and learn more about important climate solutions.

And with over 60 events around the country, be sure to forward this email to your friends so they can find one near them, too!

Thanks for all you do for the environment,

Michael Marx
Sierra Club Beyond Oil Campaign Director

P.S. Whether or not you can make it out on the 23rd, you can still promote a switch to EVs as an important way to combat climate pollution -- send Governor Brown a letter today letting him know you want to see more EV infrastructure in California!

Senator Christine Kehoe

On your feet, friends! It's time for the 2012 Stand Now! Action Fund Party and we need your support. This is our largest benefit for the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest, and with Election Day less than two months away, it’s more important than ever to stand proudly with Planned Parenthood. Please join in the campaign to keep our life-saving services available and affordable.

The 21st annual Stand Now! Action Fund Party will take place on Thursday, September 27 in La Jolla (specific location information is provided after ticket purchase). Planned Parenthood champion Senator Christine Kehoe is our keynote speaker and will receive our Lifetime Achievement Award. Senator Kehoe is a close friend and ally of our local affiliate who is leaving elected office this December after nearly 20 years of service to our community.

Purchase tickets online for $100, or contribute to our event at the Honorary Committee level—$1,000 and above—by visitingwww.ppactionca.org/standnow, and stand with us today!

Southwest today!

Longtime Planned Parenthood advocate and former Board Member, Assemblymember Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), has been elevated by Speaker of the California Assembly, John A. Perez, to Majority Floor Leader, making her one of the most powerful officers in the California Assembly as of September 1.

When asked of her loyalty to Planned Parenthood, Atkins said, “With one out of five women in the U.S. visiting a Planned Parenthood facility for health care at some time, no one knows better how barriers to health care affect women’s lives. I am proud to support their important work.” And we are proud to support Assemblymember Atkins!

Our Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest knows that by investing in steadfast proponents of choice, we advance the far-reaching future of choice as our elected officials gain in influence.

Join Majority Leader Atkins in supporting the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest today!

Congratulations, Majority Leader Atkins! We’re pleased you’re leading the way!

Parenthood Action Fund on Friday,
October 26 at Noon! RSVP today on
the Action Fund website or Facebook!

Earlier this year, Ms. Fluke, a Georgetown Law student—now a graduate—was shut out of the all-male congressional hearings on birth control. You may recall what followed: the conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh called her a "slut," and the response was extraordinary. People from all over stood up and defended Ms. Fluke—even President Obama called to show his support!

We need to make our voices heard this election, so get fired up and ready to vote! Join the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest and Sandra Fluke for a rally in Balboa Park at 6th Avenue and Laurel Street on October 26 at noon!
