Help Support a Wireless Phone Lifeline for Seniors

From May 14 through August 13, 2013 the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will be taking public comment regarding a proposal to expand its "Lifeline" discounted phone rates to wireless phones, which we urge you to support.
Currently California provides Lifeline as a discounted landline phone service for seniors and others below the poverty line.  The Lifeline program provides needed phone service so subscribers can reach public safety services, health care, and other needed services.  The CPUC is now considering expanding the discounted service to provide for qualified cell phone users and other users of newer telecommunications technology.  Such a program would add a critical protection for seniors without landlines or are away from their homes but need to connect with vital services.
On June 5 San Diego Chapter of Democracy for America (DFA) unanimously voted to support the proposal.
The resolution states, "We the members of San Diego chapter of Democracy for America unanimously support the right of seniors and those qualified in need to be provided an affordable lifeline telephone service.  Such service is critical for citizens in order to provide them access to such services as public safety, jobs, caregivers, etc.”
WILL YOU JOIN US?  The Commission wants to hear your comments!  You can attend one or more of the Public Participation Hearings (PPHs.)  You can check the CPUC Events Calendar for the times and locations at: www.cpuc.ca.gov/PUC/aboutus/pph.htm.  The San Diego PPH will be June 12, 2013, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.  At the Al Bahr Shriners Center, 5440 Kearny Mesa Rd., San Diego, CA 92111
If you are not able to attend, or have additional comments you wish to make, you may email comments to public.advisor@cpuc.ca.gov, or call the CPUC, Public Advisor’s Office (PAO) at 415-703-2074, or toll free at 866-849-8390.
