*** WED JUNE 19 at 9:00AM NOTE: " Rules Committee Meeting on MAYOR BOB FILNER'S Proposal Prevailing Wage at City Council! " Hi! CPI is excited to support Mayor Filner’s proposal to pay prevailing wage on city construction contracts and we need your help! Last month, Mayor Filner introduced example language and argued for prevailing wage at the Rules Committee. Rules Committee members directed City staff to perform an analysis and the City Attorney to draft an ordinance and bring the issue back this month for discussion. It will be returning soon, 6/19, to Rules Committee and if approved, will go to full council the next Monday or Tuesday, 6/24 or 6/25 . We are looking for community members to come speak in support of the ordinance and/or also to be part of the audience. We are excited that this is moving forward in a timely matter and look forward to positively impacting the community with this ordinance. WHEN: Rules Committee, June 19th, 9am WHERE: City Council-202 C. Street, 12th floor After the rules hearing, the ordinance is scheduled to be heard at full council on June 24th or 25th. We are not sure of the date yet but will keep you posted and hope that you can join us for both or one of these hearings. Please RSVP to me if you are able to attend. General information about Prevailing Wage: Definition: Prevailing wage requirements mean that workers on city, state and federal construction projects earn the average wage and benefits for similar jobs in the San Diego area.
Some of the key benefits of Prevailing Wage: It's good for the community. We all gain high-quality public facilities.
1. Prevailing wage attracts skilled, experienced workers who produce superior projects. Studies have shown that skilled construction workers on prevailing wage projects are 13-20% more productive than workers on non-prevailing wage projects. 2. Due to superior construction, facilities built by prevailing wage workers last longer and incur much lower repair and maintenance costs. It's good for business, because prevailing wage jobs build local economies. 3. Families with more disposable income spend more in local businesses. Their earnings multiply throughout the local economy, creating income and new jobs where those earnings are spent. Each dollar paid in prevailing wages produces an estimated $1.50 in local economic activity. 4. Businesses also benefit because prevailing wage provides fair, equal competition for construction contracts.
It's good for the workers, who are our neighbors. 1. Prevailing wage provides a pathway to middle class careers. The schools, fire stations and community centers a city builds benefit the community, and it only makes sense that its jobs should too. 2. Rather than offer low-wage, unstable work opportunities, prevailing wage projects build on apprenticeship programs that train skilled workers for lifelong careers. (Apprenticeship programs, which have active affirmative action programs, also provide an avenue for entry to construction careers for historically excluded groups, including women in the trades).

The event is Saturday, August 3, and you’ll hear a lot more about it over the next several weeks. And we're doing something special for the Idea Tournament this year. We invite you and your community to band together to present your idea, whether it’s a community garden, a needed design for a special new park or monument, a new streetlight or a much-needed crosswalk. You can find out all the details here. Submissions are due by June 30. May the best project win! you missed our email yesterday announcing this year’s Politifest, here are the deets: It will be held on Aug. 3 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Liberty Station’s Central Promenade. ★ # 3. Clean Elections Campaign - June Update- "Keep it going!" Hi Everyone - Exciting news this month. First up, we got a letter to the letter printed in the U-T this past Friday in support of clean elections by clean elections supporter, Janet Kaye. Please take a minute, put a few thoughts together and send in a letter in support of clean elections. Sending a letter by e mail is easy. It is only a click away and it works to make reference to her letter. And the U-T has a policy that the more letters they get on a subject, the more they print. Following her letter are directions by the U-T on how to submit letters. Points covered this month: - Janet Kaye's letter to the editor - U-T's directions on writing letters - Big surge in contributions - thank you! - Phone bank set-up for Monday, June 17 at 7pm - Come join us!
******************************** Union-Tribune Friday, May 31, 2013 Letters to the Editor Politicians beholden to their donors In response to the U-T article “Political party donations cap sought” (Local, May 16): Mr. Hartley has my support, as well as my husband’s, on exploring the remedy to exorbitant amounts of money spent on political campaigns. It is clearly, in my opinion, the legal buying of votes for a project and influence. “Clean Elections” seems like common sense. Many years ago I was asked to run for political office. While flattered, I knew this would cost money that I did not have, and change my family life. The only way I would be able to finance a campaign would be through developer and corporate contributions. For sure, I would be beholden to those fine people paying for professional signage and airtime. When their projects are up for a vote, I would have to recuse myself. Otherwise, of course I would vote in favor. It is the supreme conflict of interest. How could it not be? These folks “put me in office,” wined and dined me, bought me trips and game tickets. How great is that! My suggestion is to return to small donations by many people for basic PR materials. Put the huge corporate contributions to causes that matter to more people, not just the privileged few. Janet Kaye Linda Vista
******************************** To be considered for publication, a letter must include a daytime phone number and, if faxed or mailed, be signed. E-mail it to email@example.com, or fax it to (619) 260-5081. You can also send it to Letters Editor, The San Diego Union-Tribune, P.O. Box 120191, San Diego, CA 92112-0191.
********************************************* We got a big surge in contributions this month! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thanks to all who contributed this month! It will be difficult to impossible to put our clean elections measure on the ballot without building up a campaign chest. Thanks to all of you who have stepped up to make a difference! For those who have not yet had a chance to contribute, please consider contributing a small amount: $5, $10 or $15, each month by Pay Pal or if it is your desire, sent in a check. To contribute, go to our web page: www.sdcleanelections.org and click on the contribute button in the middle of the page.

But the Affordable Care Act survived it all.
★ # 4. INSTANT ACTION for the California DISCLOSE Act! www.caclean.org
Hi, California can strike a blow against Citizens United by passing the California DISCLOSE Act, a bill that would shine a bright light on the shadowy interests who depend on secrecy to influence elections. The California DISCLOSE Act (Senate Bill 52, Leno-Hill), sponsored by the California Clean Money Campaign and endorsed by Progressives United, local MoveOn.org counsels, and over 100 other organizations, would mandate clear and prominent disclosure of who is behind political TV, radio, print, and mass mailer ads -- on the ads themselves. SB 52 will stop special interests from hiding behind fake committee names by requiring ads to show their actual original contributors. Giant corporate interests are trying to kill SB 52. Join the California Clean Money Campaign and Progressives United by signing our petition to urge state legislators to pass the California DISCLOSE Act today. That's why I signed a petition to The California State House and The California State Senate, which says: "California State Senators and Assemblymembers: Vote Yes on the California DISCLOSE Act, SB 52." Will you sign the petition too? Click here to add your name: http://signon.org/sig... Thanks!

★ # 7. ALLIANCE FOR NUCLEAR RESPONSIBILITY : What exactly was Southern California Edison doing with our money during the first year that San Onofre was broken? "I DON'T KNOW...." and "I'M NOT SURE.... The witness chair is empty now, but it didn't make much difference when Southern California Edison's "expert" was sitting in it... Time and time again at the CPUC today these were his only answers under questioning by the attorney for the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility.... Throughout 2012, while the San Onofre nuclear plant was out of service, SCE was supposedly reviewing the situation, making plans and figuring out what to do with their failed steam generator replacements. Exactly what were they spending our money on during that time? Well, it seems that they don't know and aren't sure... Is that the kind of business their CEO Ted Craver is paid $11.5 million a year to run? It doesn't sound like a prudent way to spend our rate money... Ratepayers deserve accurate, detailed answers, and the questioning from Alliance attorney John Geesman will continue throughout the week. We promise to get to the bottom of this, but we need your support. Please visit our web site www.a4nr.org and please support us. Donate now! The Alliance is supported entirely by people like you. All of the funds we receive are used for education programs and travel expenses. Funds received for the Legal Fund will be used entirely for that purpose.
