***MON JULY 15 at 6:30 pm " OFA - Organizing for America  -  JOIN CLIMATE HOUSE PARTY in SAN DIEGO " OBAMA laid out his vision for a common-sense plan to combat and prepare for the impact of climate change -- all while putting American know-how and ingenuity to work for the same goals.  The President said: "What we need in this fight are citizens who will stand up, and speak up, and compel us to do what this moment demands."  That means us. It's on OFA supporters to get involved and keep the conversation going where we live. This August, while our members of Congress are home for their summer recess vacation, we'll press them to fight climate change. If they're ready to take it on, we'll tell them we've got their backs. If they're still denying the basic science behind it, we'll hold them accountable.  These house parties will be a big step to doing just that.  We'll learn more about the President's plan to combat climate change, and come up with ideas on how to spread the word.  And each party will help make plans for tackling climate change in your own community. House parties are a lot of fun -- and you'll be doing your part to join the fight near you. There's a climate house party you should check out next Monday in San Diego -- RSVP today. Sign up to attend the climate house party in San Diego today: http://my.barackobama... Where: 4237 Norfolk Terrace San Diego, CA 92116

***SAT AUG 3 at 10AM -2PM "Win $5,000 for a Community Project by Competing in the Politifest Idea Tournament, Saturday, August 3 Submissions due by June 30 Politifest is back in 2013. This year we're shifting the emphasis to a celebration of San Diego's neighborhoods -- where they're at and where they're headed.  The event is Saturday, August 3, and you’ll hear a lot more about it over the next several weeks.  And we're doing something special for the Idea Tournament this year.  Instead of individuals competing for the most innovative solution to a local problem, we’re inviting community groups to vie for funding of a worthwhile neighborhood project.  The winner will be awarded a $5,000 grant to fund that project presented by our partners at the Malin Burnham Center for Civic Engagement.  We invite you and your community to band together to present your idea, whether it’s a community garden, a needed design for a special new park or monument, a new streetlight or a much-needed crosswalk. You can find out all the details here.  Submissions are due by June 30. May the best project win!   you missed our email yesterday announcing this year’s Politifest, here are the deets: It will be held on Aug. 3 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Liberty Station’s Central Promenade. When you’re not busy promenading, you’ll be able to enjoy this year’s new focus on San Diego’s neighborhoods and their future.  And we’ll be offering something extra: $5,000. It would be a grant from our partners at the Malin Burnham Center for Civic Engagement. The money will fund the community group that offers the best neighborhood project in Politifest’s revamped Idea Tournament.  The details are here. Send in an idea or I will personally come to your house and look askance at you. Well, as soon as I figure out what that means. http://www.politifest.org/idea-tournament/

★ ★ ★    II.  BOB FILNER ?     ★ ★ ★

___________________________________________________

WELL,  I DO NOT EVEN WANT TO WRITE ABOUT THIS FIASCO!

WE FINALLY GET A DEMOCRATIC MAYOR &  BOB MESSES UP SO BADLY THE LEADING DEMOCRATS ASK HIM TO RESIGN!

GRRR!

I DO NOT EVEN LIKE THINKING ABOUT IT!

HOW SO WE MAKE AN INFORM DECISION WITHOUT THE FACTS?

ONLY A FEW PEOPLE KNOW THE FACTS.  AND THEY HAVE DECIDED.

VERA'S COMMENTS GAVE ME SOME CLARITY.

Dear Occu-Sisters, With Bob Filner’s sincere apology and specific plans for change I believe he deserves a second chance – most of all because our City needs him at a time we have hopes to loosen the grip of the special interests that have had this city in a stranglehold.  The prospect of Todd Gloria being appointed likely had the hotels, SDG&E, developer interests and others licking their chops.  In my view, our City is too important not to give him a second chance.  There is likely little chance that we could have gotten Donna or Lori in that slot.  More likely the powerful special interests would have used this time of turmoil to put their pay-for-play candidate in office.  Then where would we be?  How many more decades would it be while the City is being hollowed out by the greedy profiteers that have been running the city for years? I know we are all very upset right now as I certainly am, but I think we need to look at the big picture.  Who controls our city will affect the daily lives of hundreds of thousands in our community. Do we want more hard earned taxpayer money going to subsidize the profits of millionaire owners and players in their demands for new stadiums – while our infrastructure decays, social /educational services are cut and the chasm between haves and have-nots grows?  Do we want more corporate give-aways of prime city resources as we face increased austerity for the average citizen? When I worked on Filner’s campaign it wasn’t because he was portrayed as a perfect human being – it was because I knew he is a fighter – a fighter for us in the public interest.  That trait is hard to find. Everyone will have to sort through this issue in their own personal way.  For me I want to take the long view – what kind of city and quality of life do we want for the average San Diegan?  The special interests don’t want or need Filner.  They just buy the ethically challenged politicians to get what they want.  We are the ones who need a fighter like Filner.  He may not be the perfect vessel to carry our hopes for a better San Diego, but he’s the best hope we have and I for one want to give him that second chance. Respectfully submitted Vera Moldt

★ # 6. ALLIANCE FOR NUCLEAR RESPONSIBILIITY <rochelle@a4nr.org>  Subject:  FIREWORKS AT 77 BEALE STREET!! Reply-To:  Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility <rochelle@a4nr.org> A4NR kicks off the 4th of July by tossing a lit firecracker under the door at PG&E's headquarters in San Francisco....with the filing of our legal brief on the inability of Diablo Canyon to meet its seismic design basis-our testimony is quite the read-filled with confidential internal memos and covert emails between PG&E and the NRC. Add this to your summer thriller list: (http://a4nr.org/?p=2758).     It appears Diablo Canyon cannot meet its original seismic safety design basis after the discovery of the Shoreline Fault, and it will take a major breach of law to prevent a likely premature retirement of DCPP.  A4NR is questioning what we see as the cover up of this important issue.  The New Times did an excellent job of covering this design conundrum: http://www.newtimesslo.com/news/9668/calculational-garbage/ And an editorial: http://www.newtimesslo.com/shredder/9677/regulatory-meltdown/ At the same time, we are saddened to announce legislation sponsored by A4NR - the Nuclear Energy Planning and Responsibility Act (SB 418) - was defeated in an Assembly committee vote.   Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (the bill's author) never wavered for a moment-she and her staff gave it her "Hannah-Best" effort.  Former Senator Sam Blakeslee made his first appearance in Sacramento to support our bill, and former California Energy Commissioner (and A4NR attorney) John Geesman made excellent arguments. Both The Utility Reform Network (TURN) and the Division of Ratepayer Advocates (DRA) were there in support.  We thank each of these individuals and organizations and are grateful for the time they took to protect ratepayers.   Only Assemblyman Paul Fong voted "yes" at the hearing, with assembly members Nancy Skinner and Das Williams of Santa Barbara adding their "yes" votes while the roll call was still open. Assemblyman Bill Quirk (yep, his real name) is a nuclear physicist who believes the NRC is infallible and the CPUC over-regulated. He was the only member of the committee who volunteered opposing comments and his voice carried weight with so many newly elected representatives.     Other committee members bought into PG&E's story that they had already covered the seismic, waste storage and water impacts in their unsuccessful 2010 application for license renewal.  A4NR found PG&E's argument puzzling as their last study was done  a year before Fukushima and the NRC's new waste policy, so the costs of both events were unknown at the time.  Finally, Scott Wetch, lobbying for the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and other trade unions stated that their legal analysis showed that this bill would have curtailed current capital improvement projects at the plant, causing massive layoffs. This is not true, and their legal analysis (and its conclusions) somehow never found its way into the legislative background the assembly committee prepared for its members regarding this bill.  If you've seen it, please let us know!!   A4NR won round one with the dismissal of PG&E's 2010 application to fund their license renewal.  PG&E won round two with the demise of SB 418, but we will continue to educate these elected officials at every opportunity.  As all of you know this has been, and will continue to be a long fight, but A4NR is in it to win and we only get stronger.   Next up: Senator Padilla's hearing on "Life without SONGS" will be July 10th in Sacramento, and July 11th Independent Panel for PG&E's seismic studies meets in San Francisco.  A4NR will be at both events, continuing to voice ratepayer concerns. On July 15th we will attend (and our attorney will be on the panel) for the California Energy Commission/CPUC/ISO meeting on SONGS decommissioning and transition to non-nuclear generation in Southern California.   Please continue to join our efforts. This is a long road, but having your support is vital to maintain our ability to keep the public's voice before these decision makers.  Persistence!   In Peace, Rochelle rochelle@a4nr.org www.a4nr.org
