Subject: Does San Diego want ALEC running the show?

Dear Vera,

“There are no two ways about it -- losing sucks.” This is the reason given by ALEC apostle and San Diego politician Nathan Fletcher, former life-long Republican turned Independent, on why he decided to switch his registration once again and become a Democrat last year. San Diego progressives know when someone really shares their values and when someone doesn’t. A true progressive is NOT someone who was a proud conservative and a vocal ALEC supporter most of their life.

San Diego, tell ALEC that its draconian laws won't fly here, like they have in states like Texas and Indiana.

Nathan Fletcher has supported ALEC for years and fellow ALEC ally Karl Rove praised Fletcher just last year, saying, "Nathan Fletcher is a trusted conservative." ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) is nothing more than a front group for powerful corporations and right-wing conservatives who focus on getting state legislatures to pass bills handwritten by corporate lobbyists to benefit the 1%.

ALEC prides itself on having, as they say, “unmatched,” “unique,” and “unparalleled” influence. Every year ALEC pushes more than 1,000 bills benefiting corporations and conservatives in state legislatures across the country, including the anti-union "Right-to-Work" bills, the highly controversial "Stand Your Ground" bills, and environmental bills that increase pollution, oppose recycling laws, and seek to privatize public water. They have also given out awards to people like George W. Bush, Rick Perry, the Koch Brothers, and Scott Walker.

Lend your voice and declare that ALEC's conservative corporate legislation has no place in San Diego!

Thanks for joining this fight,

James, along with Annie, Caitlin, Eddie, Jacob C., Jacob W., Kristin, Laura, Lindsay, Michael, Paul, Sarah and Scottie (the Courage team)

★ # 3. Neighborhoods For Clean Elections Sunday, 10/6/13

Hi Everyone I hope you all had a good summer. Fall seems close.

We have a couple of items to report on. We reorganized our phone bank into a coordinating committee and we had a letter to the editor printed in the Union-Tribune!

Our long-term goal remains to place a clean elections citizen's initiative on the 2016 ballot and to build to build a clean election movement to ensure that we not only get our initiative on the ballot but to win the election! Thanks to all who are continuing your financial contribution to our campaign.

We do need to build up our war chest and if you can financially contribute to our campaign, please go to our web page: and follow the directions in the middle of the page. Thanks again for all your help.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me at 619-299-8870 or John Hartley: Campaign Coordinator

Coordinating Committee Come join us on the third Tuesday in October, 10/15/13 at 6pm.Contact me for the address if you wish to attend.

Our job now is to build a powerful clean elections movement sufficient to enact a clean elections ballot measure for the City of San Diego in 2016. Letter to the editor We got a letter in support of clean elections printed in the Union-Tribune this past month. Can you write a letter to the editor in response? The U/T has a policy of printing letters in relationship to the number that are submitted so please send in a response. It is easy with e mail and refer to the letter already printed. Directions on writing a letter to the editor for the Union-Tribune are printed after the letter. Thanks for your help!

Letters: Race for Mayor U/T San Diego - Saturday, September 28, 2013 The Sept. 23 U-T highlights the high number of donors who have contributed $1,000 to their favorite candidates for mayor.

These big-money donors are making these contributions for good government and not for buying access to the eventual winner.

If you believe that, I have bridge to sell to you. San Diegans deserve better. We deserve public financing or clean elections, where non-wealthy and non-special interest candidates have a chance to serve, and where all San Diegans have a chance to be represented. John Hartley Normal Heights

How to submit a letter to the editor of the Union/Tribune To be considered for publication, a letter must include a daytime phone number and, if faxed or mailed, be signed. E-mail it to, or fax it to (619) 260-5081. You can also send it to Letters Editor, The San Diego Union-Tribune, P.O. Box 120191, San Diego, CA 92112-0191.

Because of the number of letters we receive, and to allow as many readers as possible to be published, it is the policy of the Union-Tribune to publish no more than one letter from the same author within 30 days. Letters may be edited, for length and clarity. It is also our policy to publish letters supporting or opposing a particular issue in a ratio reflecting the number received on each side. For example, if we receive three times the number of letters supporting Side A than Side B, we'll publish three times more letters supporting Side A. Letters submitted may be used in print or in digital form in any publication or services offered by The San Diego Union-Tribune, LLC.

Anglo American Quits the Proposed Pebble Mine In a surprise decision that brought new hope to Alaska's Bristol Bay, British mining giant Anglo American -- the lead company behind the Pebble Mine -- announced that it is abandoning the project. T

he announcement dealt a heavy blow to the proposed gold and copper operation, which would produce some 10 billion tons of contaminated waste and threaten the greatest wild salmon runs on the planet. NRDC Members helped make this victory possible by deluging Anglo American with nearly one million messages of protest. The fight is not over yet -- we'll need new funding to ratchet up the pressure on the remaining companies behind the mine and win EPA action to protect Bristol Bay from large-scale mining.
