TONIGHT: Michael Moore's "SiCKO" sneak preview in Oakland!

Eden J.
Following tonight's "it's the media, stupid" DFA Meetup, you'll have the chance to watch a sneak preview of clips from Michael Moore's "SiCKO" exclusively aired for the first time on "Oprah" yesterday. You'll also see only the second TV interview that Moore has granted in the last three years.

Watch the "SiCKO" trailer on YouTube by clicking on this pic:

And then come tonight to see the extended clips!

This special "SiCKO" sneak preview/interview will run from 9-9:20 pm, following the end of our formal Meetup and our traditional "raffle" (hmmm... maybe you'll win two tickets to see "SiCKO" at Landmark Theatres? ;-).

68 DFA Meetuppers have RSVP'd for tonight's event. Have you?

PLEASE RSVP @ http://dfa.meetup.com...

Al Gore, Bill Moyers, Peter Phillips and You (and Michael Moore too)?

Yes, if you come to the the JUNE 6th Oakland DFA Meetup, you'll get to see Al Gore (on the Daily Show), Bill Moyers (on DVD), and Peter Phillips from "Project Censored" (in-person) to talk about the state of media and mediums, new and old. And, as a special treat, we'll show a sneak preview of "SiCKO," Michael Moore's new film being praised even by Fox News as "brilliant and uplifting."

That's not all, Meetup fans. Al Gore's "The Assault on Reason" will be the Grand Prize in our traditional Meetup "raffle" in addition to Project Censored's new book. Blogger extraordinaire Matt Lockshin will tell us all about "net neutrality." And we'll hear from YOU as we share our thoughts collectively on where to find the best and most useful news and information on the internet.

Your Oakland DFA Meetup formally starts at 7, but get there at 6:30 for pizza and to watch a special Bill Moyers DVD Keynote Address he gave at a recent Media Reform convention. And you get to enjoy it with some delicious hot pizza and your fellow Meetuppers.

Al Gore just released a new book called "The Assault on Reason," in which he excoriates the mainstream media (and television specifically) and warns that the "well-informed citizenry" is in danger of becoming the "well-amused audience."

"In the world of television, the massive flows of information are largely in only one direction, which makes it virtually impossible for individuals to take part in what passes for a national conversation," writes Gore in "The Assault on Reason."

How is this happening? What was the catalyst? And what can we do about it?

In 1987, under Ronald Reagan, the Fairness Doctrine was eliminated. This doctrine insured equal access to all voices in the media, by requiring licensees to provide balanced time for divergent voices and local commentary. That is gone now.

Media behemoths like Clear Channel and Viacom may think otherwise but our airwaves are not their real estate. Twenty years ago when Congress abandoned the Fairness Doctrine, the public never imagined the demise of TV and radio airwaves into a handful of owners.

On June 6th, come hear Dr. Peter Phillips of Project Censored, talk about all of this and more.

Peter Phillips

Dr. Phillips is an avid spokesperson for the untold stories we don't hear about. A professor at Sonoma State, Dr. Phillips has co-authored several books through Project Censored providing information on stories the AP won't host, including "CENSORED 2007: The Top 25 Censored Stories: 30th Anniversary Edition" which will be available for purchase ($20, for sale by Dr. Phillips).

With every DFA Meetup, of course, we focus on finding hope. As Gore explains in his new book, the internet is ground zero for positive change. And Matt Lockshin, who founded the ground-breaking blog "Say No To Pombo," will talk with us about how to actualize that change.

Whereas television often suppresses public debate, Gore believes that the Internet encourages it. He writes that it "has extremely low entry barriers for individuals. It is the most interactive medium in history and the one with the greatest potential for connecting individuals to one another and to a universe of knowledge? It's a platform, in other words, for reason."

But, as Gore warns, there are still just a "very small number of broadband network operators" who have an "an economic incentive to extend their control over the physical infrastructure of the network to leverage control of Internet content. If they went about it in the wrong way, these companies could institute changes that have the effect of limiting the free flow of information over the Internet in a number of troubling ways."

At this month's DFA Meetup, Matt will tell us about "net neutrality" and what you can do to save the internet and its vital role in our evolving democracy. And share your favorite web sites with your fellow Meetuppers (bring a list!).

If you believe democracy depends on a diversity of voices, please RSVP so we can order enough pizza!
