Please join us January 14 as we welcome Randy Shaw, author of "Beyond the Fields: Cesar Chavez, the UFW, and the Struggle for Justice in the 21st Century," Executive Director and Supervising Attorney of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, and editor of the online daily BeyondChron.org.

Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers mobilized Latinos and low-income workers into a pioneering, grassroots activism. They set the stage for later social movements from environmentalism to the Obama campaign. In fact, both Obama in 2007 and Howard Dean in 2003 hired UFW organizers to build their grassroots campaigns.

Moving into the 21st century, Dean's campaign set the stage for online organizing that Obama's campaign powered up by orders of magnitude to win the Democratic nomination and the General Election in 2008.

Our January 14th DFA Meetup will dig into the community organizing roots of the 2008 victory and explore best practices of community and online organizing we can apply to push our progressive agenda to victory on all fronts.

Who knows? Maybe we can even find an answer to this question posed by Randy after the November election:

Where is California's Barack Obama?

"Good organizing changes the world. In fact, it's what humanity is made out of. Every one of us is the product of centuries upon centuries of the struggle between good organizing and bad organizing. Barack Obama—through the most incredible, random, beautiful, twists of history—has brought good organizing back."
- Zack Exley, The New Organizers, What's really behind Obama's ground game

Sorry to miss it, but life coughed up the excellent alternative of a kidney stone, an opportunity I just couldn't let pass. See you next month.
