“At every turn when there has been an imbalance of power, the truth questioned, or our beliefs and values distorted, the change required to restore our nation has always come from the bottom up from our people.” - Howard Dean

The United States was built by immigrants who came here seeking a better life for themselves and their families: The American Dream. Today there are those who see the diversity that made us strong as the reason we are in trouble. Come to our July Meetup where we’ll look at immigration issues and community organizing!

Grass Roots Organizing is what EB DFA does best. Claudia Albano who trained in the Alinsky tradition will talk about organizing. New models of organizing. She is a lecturer as UC Berkeley in the School of Social Welfare. She was trained in community organizing tradition of Saul Alinski and studied with Fred Ross, Sr. of the United Farm Workers. She teaches a class on grassroots organizing at UC Berkeley

Claudia’s current work as Neighborhood Services Manager with the City of Oakland features an innovative combination of community organizing practice and community policing philosophy

There's more to come for this Meetup, so check back and see what's on tap.

We will look at how organizing is impacting issues facing immigrants and how those issues can be useful in bringing them into the progressive fold. Issues like Arizona’s immigration law. A law that turns Hispanic citizens into targets.

“We're not going to deputize a whole bunch of American citizens to start grabbing people or turning them in, in part because the ordinary American citizen may not know whether or not this person is illegal or not.” President Obama

Today you can take ACTION!

Credo wants you to sign their petition to Attorney General Holder asking him to file suit to prevent this blatantly unjust and unconstitutional law from ever going into effect.

East Bay Young Dem’s Event

EBYD’s mission is to ensure that young people have a strong voice in the Democratic Party. We believe that the best way to accomplish this goal is help young people connect with and create opportunities for meaningful service. Along the way, we believe it’s important to approach our work with a sense of humor and to have a good time while we take control of our futures.

A staple for their calendar – Mix It Up East Bay: Casual Cocktails, Serious Organizers.
It’s every second Thursday of the month 6-9pm at Shashamane International Bar & Grill (2507 Broadway, Oakland).
This monthly happy hour brings together young activists, organizers and leaders in the East Bay working on issues we all care about. This is where the hot people doing all kinds of good work go to meet each other and see what’s going on.

Stay updated on each month’s theme by joining EBYD Mix It Up on Facebook! http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2609191582

“HouseQuake” Documentary Screening

In 2006 the Democrats took back the House of Representatives and set the table for taking back the Senate and the Presidency in 2008. One of the biggest victories in 2006 was the defeat of Richard Pombo in CD 11. That victory is one of the races covered in this documentary on how the seismic change was made possible by grass roots activists – in fact many of us from EB DFA will be seen in the documentary.

The documentary will screen Sunday, June 13, at the United Film Fest in the Mission. It will play at 6pm at the Roxie Theater, 3117 16th Street San Francisco, CA 94103. You can get tickets for the screening here:
