Aquaponics 101 and IBC Tote System Construction

  • Mar 9, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Now is the time to start thinking about all the great things that you can do in your garden this year! So, if you have ever thought that Aquaponics might be something that you would like to try, but didn't know where to start this would be the perfect thing for you to begin with. Even if you know a little about Aquaponics, this workshop will give you a much greater grasp on the mechanics of the systems and their capabilities.

For this workshop, we will have over SEVEN HOURS of instruction where we will cover just about everything that you need to know to go home to build and operate your own Aquaponic system. For the morning session will go through our "Aquaponics 101" curriculum (detailed below), and then we will have lunch with an informal Q&A to discuss some of the specifics related to "Texas" Aquaponics. Afterward, the afternoon session will be a hands-on construction opportunity to build a demonstration system using the most common component for a backyard AP system -- an IBC tote. Specifically, we will go through the steps to build a system from one tote, and then how to expand it with a second.

All participants will receive a hardcopy training manual that contains all of the information presented (Aquaponics 101 and the IBC tote manual.)

I thought that we had a great time. Thanks to everyone for bearing with the few delays that we had. I was so happy to see a great group of people who have a sincere interest in learning about Aquaponics. Anyone that has pictures, please post any you can to the photo album I have set up for this class.

So sorry I missed this class. I am looking IBC Totes, today. Do you have and connections to get ones that are "safe." ;-) What about seeds? Have you found seeds that you trust are not GMO? Last, as for the water...do you filter it so it does not have the added water the city adds or do you use only caught water?

Thanks for being here. What a blessing!

    Thanks Adam,
WOW! This is the Best Aquaponics Class I have ever gone to. Folks don’t waste your time, sign up now. I am very proud to be one of the 1st class members in Adam’s new facility. If you’re a newbie or a ‘Veteran Ponner’ go to Adam’s class it was well worth it. Adam’s dad was put in the Hospital and he still put aside his personal emergency just to teach this class. That screams volumes about his character. I, a retired Dallas Fireman, salute you and your family. I will be your friend for life. (Fireman Term) “You go…I Go!” Folks everyone needs to have a working Aquaponics system in their back yards. So let’s ‘team up’, ‘cowboy/cowgirl up’ and ‘get er’ done’. Network, Network, Network!!! (Adam, my prayers are with your Dad’s quick recovery.)

When I saw the meetup date being just 1 day from now, I was so excited. Then I remember I have a young toddler, so I won't be able to go. Boo. I'm hoping to attend soon though. Is there anything you guys have available on a weekday?

I have volunteer a couple times at the worm ranch so i can tell you while its not complicated, its not easy to herd them. it would be ideal if they had a Worm Herd dog, but alas none exist that I know of. My understand is Heather will be in the class. So she can answer all your worm questions. I have heard that these worms are not fit for the texas soil. Not sure too much is fit for Texas soil.

    Is this event full yet?

    March 4, 2013

    • Adam

Nope, there are 10 spaces left. I think there are three or four people who have left comments saying that they are planning to sign up though...

      March 4, 2013

  • Bob P.

I"m going to go ahead and knock off $10 more to my fellow class mates. To everyone who has ordered one already they will be $80 delievered to the class. You have to have the means to take them home. You then will have something to work on after you get all the great info Adam will be teaching you.

I have two left. If you need me to deliever them to you I have to add $25 for the gas and handling them.

I'm having to make room in my storage building.

It is 8ft with the tailgate down. I would like the last two totes for total of $160 right? I'll bring several straps to hold down.

      March 4, 2013

    • Bob P.

Okey Dokey, So you want a total of 2. Yes $160. I will have them on my utility trailer.

I have got my totes and would like to know what kind of paint for the outside is best and where I might purchase it?
Looking forward to being at the class on Saturday. I'm a vegetarian and this is perfect!!!

    March 4, 2013

    • Adam

Sounds great Pat. Make sure that you RSVP to ensure your spot for Saturday! I will cover specifics of paint and other such in the class, but really any Exterior Latex will do - all you need to do is prevent thenUV light from striking the plastic bladder of the tote. All the details you need will be in the class. This will be a great class, I think!!!

Looking forward to hooking up with Green Phoenix Farms and all the wonderful people associated with them.

FYI: I'm bring a couple of (Food Grade) IBC's for Green Phoenix to work on for the class. I have an extra 4-IBC's that I'm bringing for any Class Member to Purchase to the March 9th Class. Class members only, $90!!. If you need me to deliver them I will have to charge and extra $25. The $90 (used-food grade) 275 gal IBC's will go fast. I'm getting new containers shipped to me but they will be more expensive.

It's not a lack of desire to attend it's a time and $ issue. I won't need the tote right away anyways. I'm still learning but figured I could start acquiring parts. I'd like to go to every class offered but at $60+ each it's going to be difficult to justify going to more than one.

      February 26, 2013

    • Aaron K.

I won't need one, thanks though.

I will bring myself and Suzan, my fiancé. Question----Has anyone done an aquaponic system with solar energy? The concern is if energy ever becomes an issue, as in NO electric, this could be a big problem if you want to sustain your family.

    March 3, 2013

    • Aaron K.

I've seen it done online by many people, I intend to use solar as well.

Judy, Remy, and Vivian --- There are no materials needed for this workshop. We will provide the content manual when you arrive. This will be approximately 30 pages of information that combines what we will cover in the Introduction to Aquaponics class and in the IBC System Construction workshop. For the workshop itself we will break into two groups to build a pair of demonstration systems.

For those of you who are interested in building your own IBC system, we will have DIY Kits available that will contain all the pieces that you will need (w/o the IBC) to build your own system using our design.

Also, we will look into sources where IBC totes can be purchased for use in Aquaponics.

  • Judy H.

I am interested in this class, but have a couple of questions. If me and my husband attended, of course we only need 1 set of supplies, will it be $120.00? Also, will an IBC be included, or where one can be purchased?

    February 20, 2013

  • Bob P.

    Hi Adam,

    I'm going to your class.

Big questions. I personally have a couple of IBC's can I bring them to actually do my hands on with those containers?

Satisfaction is guarenteed for this workshop. If you do not feel that this was worth the cost of attending, then your money will be refunded in full.
