Cedar Hill ISD Aquaponics build out - call for volunteers!!!

On this coming Saturday, November 10th, I will be hosting a hands-on workshop presentation and build of a large scale Aquaponics system in the Agriculture greenhouse located at the Cedar Hill High School. This system will be built from scratch using lumber and pond liner, and will be a hybrid media and raft system. Meaning that the fish tank will flow into a series of media beds where the solids and fish waste will be processed and de-toxified into nutrients for the plants. From here, the water will flow into a long sump that will act as a secondary grow space using Rafting. This is where the plants will grow directly into the nutrient water and will only be supported by a styrofoam board.

The planned times for this workshop will be from 9am to 3 or 4pm. Individuals are welcome to come for any part of the workshop and a participate as much as they would like. There is no official cost for this activity, but we will be collecting donations (a suggested donation of $5-10 per person) for the further development of the Cedar Hill Future Farmers of America chapter. With a donation of $30, you will receive full plans and materials for the system as built in the greenhouse.

I have hit a small plumbing snag, but I think that it will be resolved within a few days. I hope to plan another event for early in 2013 when everyone can come out and see the system in operation and running.

Let me know how i can help. I am anxious to learn how to build a system, especially one that is off-grid and functions from renewable energy such as solar, wind or biomass.
