Aquaponics is a closed-loop nutrient recycling system. Simply put, it is a combination of traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). Using this method can dramatically increase the levels of production in a smaller space footprint. Even better, the produce and fish are of the absolutely highest quality! Aquaponics is a method of growing edible plants and fish in a single system that is extremely well suited for the urban environment. Additionally, aside from being totally organic and natural, it is VERY water efficient (using less than 10% of the water necessary for a comparable soil garden).
This group has been formed to provide a point of contact for all people in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, and truly all of North Texas, to come together and learn more about aquaponics and other related techniques. I really want us to work together to develop a local community where we can learn from each other and to refine our abilities and even develop new methods that are specialized for our specific climate and culture choices.
As we now move into our second year, the goals that I have for this group have morphed a small bit. I still want us to have a regular meet-up where we discuss methods and designs, but I want to try to make this group more accessible to individuals across the DFW metroplex. To that end, we are going to rotate locations - one month the meeting will be in Mansfield (South), the next month it will be in Carrollton (North-East), and the next it will be in Ft. Worth (West). I hope to have SIX monthly meetings this year and I will have door prizes and informational take-away handouts at every gathering. I also plan to schedule AT LEAST six workshop events (hands-on) this year (generally every month that we do not have a meeting) where we will visit existing aquaponic facilities, construct specific equipment components, and even to build entire aquaponic systems.
