As part of my growth project in the school, I had to come up with a two year project that would benefit our school community. Introducing acquaponics to students would be great. It would set them thinking about the amazing possibilities of gardening creatively and responsibly. We have a genius Biology teacher, and he is very savvy about rigging things up. He is a herpetologist and raises fish as well.
We are limited as far as budget goes, but if we start small and it is successful, this is something that has great possibilities. I'd like to teach it as a system that supports self sufficiency.
My son introduced me to the concept. He built a beautiful fish pond with a small waterfall, a pump, a greenhouse, the pvc pipes for the plants. It should be finished soon.
My name is Melenie and I teach at a private school in Dallas. This year two of us want to build an aquaponics system in the school. We are also planning a hugelmound and a keystone garden.
