We meet up and randomly pick a "seed" sentence from a newspaper. Then we write for 45 minutes, using that sentence as the first in the story. When time's up, we pass around our laptops and read each other's stories. Lots of research shows that creativity is often sparked by "constraints" (in this case, using a pre-determined sentence and only having 45 minutes,) so the intent here is to spark your creativity. If you are shy or not interested in sharing your work, then you can just use this time as a way to force yourself to write. The good news is in 45 minutes no one is going to write a masterpiece; what's interesting is seeing the different ways we all use the exact same "seed" for our stories.
