Photography 201: Outdoor Portrait & Headshot Speedlight and Flash Techniques

[masked]-_MG_9702 Eric Leuthardt Photography presents Photography 201: Outdoor Portrait & Headshot Speedlight and Flash Techniques

Do you have a speedlight or two? Do you want to add more mood and options to your outdoor portraits? Have you ever wanted to add some detail to a model and needed more than a reflector? This class is for you. We will cover simple fill flash to balance the sun as well as more advanced techniques such as overpowering the sun and other special effects. This is a hands on class designed to teach you the basics of outdoor portrait and headshot lighting using speedlights.

Topics covered will include:

  • Single light
  • Two light
  • Overpowering the sun
  • Special effects

I will have equipment on hand and will demonstrate these ideas, so make sure to bring your cameras as a model will be present and you will have the opportunity to photograph the model using the basic lighting set ups to help reinforce the material being taught. If you have your own speedlights and transmitters, feel free to bring them.

This class will last approximately 2.5 hours.

Registration is $59 in advance or $79 at the door and is limited to the first 15 photographers. You can make your registration payment online or email me to make other arrangements.

I teach a Lightroom class, but since I rarely use Photoshop I don't teach that. On occasion, Darryl will do a PS class.

Eric, what is your go-to lens for headshots? I don't like bringing lenses that stay in the bag.

I usually bring my 50mm f/1.4 for this class, but I am carrying a lot of other equipment. I also like the[masked] f/2.8L, but it is heavy.

Eric, been meaning to do this for months, thankful I found your class, how can we prep for your class to get the most out of it?
(I've already made one run through Lighting 101 at Strobist)

Sunscreen, a bottle of water, maybe a hat or sunglasses and make sure your media card is clean and your batteries are charged. Really, if you are familiar with your camera and ready to learn that is all the prep I can recommend.

Eric I have not taken your lighting 101 , so should I wait before I take the 102 class?

    July 10, 2013

    • Eric Leuthardt P.

There is no need. All of my classes stand on their own. The 101 class is an overview of many of the equipment options out there, what you can make instead of buy and more in depth about each piece of equipment. That class is a webinar currently scheduled for the 16th. This class is more of a hands on with the equipment and on some time spent on what to buy and not to buy.

Anytime I have a class that gives you the opportunity to shoot a model, one is provided.

Hello.. I have a speedlite but have never used It before. Is this the class for me. Can I bring my own daughter to photograph as well, after the shoot. She will not be in the way at all. Thanks

    • Eric Leuthardt P.

This class is good no matter your experience using your speedlight. As for bringing your daughter, I would suggest bringing her back at another time.
