Eaglefest!

Its time once again for Eaglefest in Emory!  The fest starts at 9am.  I will be there early.  This is a great event because there will be a bus and barge tour to spot wild eagles.  There will be a variety of raptor/birds of prey shows too.  I have seen both the Last Chance Forever show and Back Land Prairie Center show. They are both great!   Last year we had a variety of questions about what to bring.  I would recommend bring a variety of zoom lens.   A 300mm and a 28-70mm will be fine.  You will want to bring fingerless gloves too.  This is a great event for both seasoned and new shooters.

I am sorry to hear that the barge tour was not great. I was to be on the 12:30 and it was canceled. They will be refunding my money. I didn't want to go on the bus tour again. I just go off. I didn't think I would see any eagles. I hope everyone got to enjoy the raptor show. Last chance forever does a great job. We saw 2 eagles on the 9:30 bus tour. They were on the earth dam. Dave they had more vendors in 2010. The bad snow in 2011 canceled the event for that year. I would like to thank everyone who came out.

So true!!! I liked being on the lake. Even tho' it was choppy. I just hope my "wild horses" workshop in May nets some wild horses! :-)

It's not a meetup. It's a small workshop in Colorado.

Roy and I got there late and are sorry we missed you all. We were on the noon bus and, unfortunately, didn't see any eagles. But we very much enjoyed the live bird shows and got some pretty good shots there.

I was on one of the 7.00 am barges, enjoyed it. Saw a few eagles and plenty of other birds. Was v cold, but thanks to the heads up on the site was more or less prepared. Great to meet other members and potential members.

We got there just before 9am, didn't find the group, ended up going on our own. We didn't know about all the fees for the pontoon and buses. It wasn't a good day.

Yes, despite the excellent weather, the winds did us in. Even the white pelicans (who are fun to shoot) were scarce. Not sure I will attend again, but would be interested in knowing if there are lakes closer by where we can shoot water fowl. I looked up Lake Lavon and drove by on my way home. Looks like there's birds down there. Probably no eagles.

Is there a particular spot? Never been there, but I'll plan to go. Thanks, Dave!

I've seen the pelicans all over the lake the cormorants are at the opposite end from the dam. They hang out in a cluster of trees. Sorry can't be more specific

I thank Greg for putting this meetup together. as far as the event I don't think I will attend again. there were not enough vendors to make it worth my time to drive that far. as far as the barge trip, I was on the 9:30 and believe it should have been cancelled due to wind. pontoon boats and whitecaps on the water do not work well together. we didn't see any eagles but that is the chance you take when dealing with nature.
thanks again Greg for putting this event together.

Sorry maybe should have been more clear. Which should I bring, a tripod or a monopod?

I am signed up for the 9:30 barge tour. This will be my first time with this group and my first eaglefest. Is anyone else taking the 9:30 barge?

I also have never been to this group and I'm on the 9:30 tour. Looking forward to it! :)

Hi there, I am new to this group, and have booked on the 7am barge, looking forward to meeting you. Quick question, how will us newbies recognize the rest of you? secret handshake? ;-)

Greg which barge tour would you recommend 7:00am or 9-30am for best chance at seeing eagles?

    January 13, 2014

  • Patti A.

Are the bus tickets available only on-line or can we get them there, too?

    January 13, 2014

    • Tim L.

Patti, if you are planning on doing one of the tours, it would be recommended to purchase them online and reserve a tour. You will take a gamble on getting a tour when you show up. There are only 3 barge tours and they are really great to experience.

      1 · January 13, 2014

    • Patti A.

Thanks, Greg and Tim. We'll go ahead & get them on line then.

Has anyone that suffers from motion sickness been to this? How did you do on the barge?

    December 28, 2013

    • Greg D

It isn't too bad. I would be more concerned with staying dry and warm.

      December 28, 2013

    • Tim L.

It is a barge and on a lake. As long as the weather is not too windy, the boat ride should be a lot of fun. If you are prone to motion sickness, take a Dramamine before boarding.

      January 13, 2014

  • Patti A.

Roy & I plan on attending, but we will be there after 9am. Really looking forward to it!

I missed the event last year, but I though I remembered seeing something about a boat tour is that still available or am I mistaken?

    December 25, 2013

I will get a ticket for the 7:30 barge and hopefully we will get some birds in flight
