Lake Grapevine FIREWORKS!

  • May 23, 2014 · 8:30 PM

Every Friday night, from Memorial Weekend to Labor Day Weekend, the City of Grapevine puts on a very lovely fireworks display at Lake Grapevine.  We photographed it a few times in previous years and it is a lovely display.  So lets do it again!

Items you may want to bring: Camera, Tri-pod, flashlight, folding chair if you want to arrive a little early, bug spray, drinking water.

Time:  I'll try to arrive around 8:30 so I can mark the trail down to the lake, but the fireworks don't start till 9:30

Location:  There is no direct address I can give you.  What you need to do is Mapquest/Garmin the following address: 1800 Chris Craft Dr Grapevine Tx.  That address will give you the approximate location. If you look to the north of that address you will see "Katie's Wood Dr." From the intersection of "Katie's Wood Dr" and "Chris Craft Dr" their is a place to park just to the west of that intersection. This place to park leads to some trails in the woods. I'll be driving my what Chevrolet TAHOE, and I will park it there. I'll also have some yellow "CAUTION TAPE" that I will use to mark the trail. It is not a long walk from the parking spot to the waters edge, but it is a wooded trail. You may want to wear long pants. Simply follow the trail to the waters edge and you'll see us there. If you get lost,[masked] is my cell phone number.

If the place to park is full of vehicles, you can probably park over near "Katies Woods Loop" and walk to the other location. [/color]

I've noticed between my two cameras (both Canons) that some colors of firework show up better on one camera than on the other. Have any of you noticed any particular colors that show up especially well in your shots? How about any that don't show up well?

As this was my first fireworks shoot, I realized that having a remote or cable shutter release with the bulb mode would be an excellent choice. However 2 seconds self-timer works well if one can anticipate the burst timing 2 seconds in advance. Then again I realized that with the shutter speed already set to 4 or 5 seconds, I do not have any control on the exposure time after I release the shutter. Hence bulb and a remote shutter release seems to be THE choice to get some nice crisp shots. And that’s what I want to try next time… probably next Friday. Cheers folks and have a great weekend.

Andy that's a cool way and I can totally see the possibilities with this trick. Thanks so much for sharing.

I'll be there on some other Fridays, but wasn't there last night. As someone else posted in the comments on a photo, it would be great if posted photos included setup details (ISO, aperture, and shutter speed). I know for my fireworks photos the shutter speed has to be pulled from the metadata because I shoot almost exclusively in Bulb mode with a wired remote. Any other tips people want to share - what worked well and also what didn't work so well - would help everyone, I think. Thanks, and I look forward to being out there several times between next weekend and Labor Day.

Great show and I am glad I was be there. Thanks Darryl for organizing the meet up and for your valuable tips. I most probably would be there next Friday to hone my skills on photographing fireworks. Would look forward to a next meetup soon.

Great fireworks.....however I never met up with the group....I sort of missed the path that leads down to the water. I ended up sitting by the water but to the East of where everyone else was. I NOW know where the path is...found it on my way out. So next time.....I'll see everyone.

I must have missed the trail, never saw the caution tape. I am set up by the waters edge waiting for the show to start

One of the replies confused me a little. Do the fireworks start tonight or next week? Thx!

I actually won't be there this weekend (Rangers game), but will be there for another weekend. This series is a great local opportunity to figure out settings that work best for your equipment. I've found that the "best settings" on one camera may not be the best on another - even by the same maker. Case in point: my EOS 50D and Digital Rebel XT have different "best" settings. Bottom line: the Grapevine series is a great classroom. Enjoy it!

Hey Andy, actually the Fireworks start next Friday, not tonight. But definately cheer on those Rangers! I hope to be there Sunday.

Kumaresh, If you follow the details in the instructions I don't think you'll have any issues. We've used the instructions for years with pretty good success.

I might not make it if my brother and his family comes to town. But I highly recommend shooting near the Glass Cactus/Gaylord Texan if they do not object. I saw the show there a while ago.

I've photographed these fireworks several times, and they're good. If the trail is the one I've used, there is also a sign warning you to watch out for snakes. Thankfully, though, I've never seen a snake there - but the sign may be helpful as a location cue.
