Big Bend National Park

I am planning a trip to Big Bend for Memorial Day weekend and would be happy if other club members wanted to go too.  It is about a 10 hour drive so the plan is to leave Sat morning and return Mon evening.

If you are interested in car pooling with other members, please post a comment and everyone can work out the details.

I'm guessing you guys have never been to Big Bend National Park? I admit that I spent only four hours in the Park before I decided to return to Dallas, but I had already spent two weeks driving across Texas and New Mexico by that time and I was tired. I can't say how you will see it, but it seems to me that driving for 10+ hours, setting up camp for a day, then driving 10+ hours back leaves you with about 10 hours for photography in a place that would take you months to explore. Where in the Park do you intend to visit? Just the Chisos Mountain Lodge? I drove straight to the ghost town of Hot Springs and spent an hour in the hot springs pool. Another ghost town, far more famous, is on the other side of the Park, a town called Terlingua. Take lots of water. Big Bend area is hitting in the 90s+ these days, and there is no water most places.

TD Hathcock, if you decided to go, you are welcome to carpool with Larry and myself. We'll be starting around 7:30 from Addison.

I'm still waffling on this a bit. I am interested in getting start trails and milky way photos while there. I am reaching out to the McDonald observatory to see if I can use one of the Telescope housings as foreground for star trails. I will probably make a decision by Wednesday whether I go or not. I went last year and got some really nice shots but I have also learned so much more since then, I should be able to get even better shots.

If you have an SUV, there are quite many roads in the park passable only by a high clearance vehicle. I have a sedan, so I'll have to stay on paved or gravel roads...

Next morning, get up early and get back to the park through Maverick Junction, take Old Maverick Road (unpaved) to the Santa Elena Canyon, then Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive up to Chisos Mountain Lodge, possibly have lunch and/or dinner there, depending on how much time it takes. Hope to take couple of hikes as well, The Window and Pine Canyon trail most likely as they get the most positive comments.

Hope to take night pictures as well as star gazing is supposed to be great. So that should take well into the night, and should be back to hotel pretty late. Not sure there will be any energy left for more pictures next morning, so maybe just drive back home.

I booked myself a room in Big Bend Resort & Adventures. Its on the south west border of the part, on the intersection of routes 118 and 170. I would suggest that if we want to shoot together, we should try to book the same accommodation, because the park is very large, and we don't want to spend time driving around just to meet each other.

My plan is to start from Dallas early Saturday morning to get to the park with considerable daylight to spare. Enter the part from the north entrance (Permission Gap), check out the Dagger Flat Auto Trail, leisurely drive through the park scouting good locations for pictures, exit the part through Maverick Junction, which is close to my hotel, and spend the night there.

are there more details about lodging etc. or a plan once we get there?

I'd like to carpool with someone who's driving; sharing expenses of course.

Henry and I spoke at dinner last night about this trip and it sounds like a lot of fun.
